Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread - Page 127

 

The R10 was built much better, IMO, only L3000 has better build quality among the dynamics headphones that I own/owned.  Speaking of the foam rings on the R10s, one can always purchase a urethane foam, cut up and it works just fine.  Did that myself for one of my R10 as the Sony parts are no longer available.   BTW, you just thrown out a $100 bill.  Many are searching for the E888 in good condition.  :D

Now that I've had the TH900s for several months, they have gotten much better. The occasional exaggerated bass and slightly screaming highs have both calmed down

(disappeared I'd say) and they are just a wonderful headphone. But, they are a close-in perspective, like 3rd or 4th row seating, and they present a nice contrast from

my LCD3s and HD800s, and I actually appreciate that-- vive la differance.

They truly complement the more open-staged headphones.

They remind me of the Grado approach to sound, but with a much more refined sound, without the Grado flaws I hear (meaning piercing treble or disconnected pumping bass).

The TH900s are certain keepers, but they would not be my only phones.

When I walked past my local hi-fi dealer earlier this evening I was surprised to see none other than the Fostex TH900 in the window, so I duly popped in to investigate.

 

I gave the TH 900 a brief listen using iPhone and lossless files as a source and muchly enjoyed what I heard. Some of the treble detail e.g. cymbals sounded slightly unclear, but I'd say that's due to my iPhone which I know provides fuzzy treble in relation to my dedicated DAC/Amp which sounds noticeably clearer than my iPhone.

 

The tonality of the TH 900 seemed very natural and the soundstage was very open (I found that impressive, considering the TH 900 is a closed-back). I loved the TH 900's bass presence and was thrilled to feel the visceral sound pressure which had an inviting resonance that almost sounded bulbous but sounded controlled enough to sound about right to me. I'm sure the bass would probably have sounded tighter and more controlled if the TH 900 was plugged into my Lavry DA10, but all things considered the TH 900 sounded great out of my iPhone. I thought the instrument separation was really clear and perhaps what impressed me most about the Fostex.

 

I may go back into the store and take my HD 800 rig and do a side-by-side comparison with the TH 900. That could be fun!

 

 

These are serious signs of the beginning of the end of your HD800 ownership.  - Just kiddin.. enjoy the shootout and feel free to report back.

 

I'll keep you guys posted if I compare the HD 800 and TH 900. I'm switched back to the HD 800's stock cable and am falling in love with the HD 800 even more now. It'd be nice to have both the Senn and the Fostex though! :)

yea that would be a killer combo - something I may consider down the road as well...

Hi guys I need your help!

I recently going to purchase a Zonotone power cable from Japan to fit my Luxman gear and th900. However I found that the cable stated: 125v 15A. Is this means I have to use 125v voltage supply for this cable? Or is it ok to use it under 240v voltage because I live in Australia??

Sorry I'm late to the party-- still working through the thread. Have people experimented with high-end desk-top amplification with the TH900? Does it scale up so to speak? Anyone here getting good results with tube amplification? I own and love the Denon D7000's, and happily drive them with a Woo WA6-- a very civilized combination. As soon as the tax return comes in, I'll probably be springing for the Fostex...

 

Has anyone purchased them from HeadRoom? Any over the phone discount?

Yes I got very good results using tube amps. It brought out some mid (meat) of  the Th900. I prefer tube amps over my other SS amps (M1 HPA, Headroom ultra desktop, RX3).

I'm enjoying mine with the WA6SE... I think the TH900s will go great with your WA6 as well..

The TH900 sure scales up with the Pinnacle amp. Yeah, after a lot of experimenting, tubes make the amp.
