Beyerdynamic DT250 (250ohms) - recessed mids?

Does the headphone in the title have recessed mids, compared to something like the AKG K271 Mk. II?

I know it's said to be dark in sound signature and also somewhat like a closed version of an HD6x0, so does that mean it has emphasized lower mids?

I had the 80ohm version and the mids weren't blatantly recessed....maybe just a bit compared to some AKG's like the 240DF(never heard the 271), but good detail and very balanced sound. Somewhat rolled off in the treble but I wouldn't call them 'dark'. Lower mids seem very flat....not bloated at all. Much better phone than the v6, imo, but I kept the v6 because it fold up for portable use.

I don't find the mids to be recessed on the 80 ohm version. They are dark in the highs though.

If you remove the foam over the drivers and replace it with a thin cloth, or maybe speaker cloth, you can get more treble.

The 250 Ohm version probably has more extended treble as well (as can be seen on these graphs, which may not be reliable, though).

I have never heard of the DT 880 described as "dark" or as the equivalent of a "closed HD 6x0". Quite the opposite on both counts, really.

The 880 is traditionally described as either bright or neutral, and vs both HD 600 and HD 650, it is considered brighter.

Its semi-closed backing has often been described as "essentially open".

Omg too embarrassed for words now. Sorry, sorry! I'm falling asleep at work. =\

Uhh, for what it's worth, I have tried the DT 250 and it's a *little* dark, but is mostly neutral and has excellent comfort + isolation...

They certainly don't have the most bright and engaging sound as far as Beyers go, but they are quite neutral and pleasant sounding.

For those who have heard it - would you say that the DT250 (250ohms) is 'bass-centric' or 'mid-centric'? Is the focus on mids or bass?

Is it an actual bass-monster, how does the bass compare to M-Audio Q40, or Audio Technica M50, for example?

On it's own, I wouldn't say that my attention is directed to any particular frequency range. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable calling it "mid-" or "bass-centric." Compared to the M50 (never heard the Q40), it is without a doubt "mid-centric."

Is there a comparison link between the 80 and 250 ohm model? Also, has anyone on headfi compared these with some german maestro cans? I can't seem to find any good links

From the horse's mouth:

"I just got this email from beyerdynamic in Germany re the differences between the 80 ohms and 250 ohm dt250s.

thank you for your mail! The 80 ohms and 250 ohms transducers differ both in mechanics and sound: the 80 ohms model has a quite long overhang voicecoil which offers a very high power handling (for full throttle use in recording studios for example). For this, we need a lot of copper for the voice coil making the moving mass (diaphragm and voice coil weight) higher than in a 250 ohms transducer. The higher impedance model has a lighter and shorter underhang voice coil and therefore sounds more detailed, more controlled. Both will work with an Ipod, the 80 ohms version will propably play slightly louder than the 250 ohms version, but as you plan to use them with the Benchmark headphone amp, i personally would prefer the 250 ohms phones for sound reasons and accept a slightly lower maximum volume from the Ipod. Or you take both ;-)
Hope, this helps!

Damn, I really want to try the 250 ohm model now. Anyone want to sell theirs?"

I just got a pair of the 80 ohm ones as part of the DT290, and they are brighter than I remember the 250 ohm ones being.  The pads are also different, with a thick bottom with holes punched in.  I'm not sure whether they are actually different or not.  They are good, though, and definitely midcentric.

What does that mean?

The DT290 is a different headphone to the DT250?
