I will definitely give that one a listen, you're not the first to recommend it. Thanks.

Same hear.  I actually prefer the HE-500 for vocals over the LCD-2 rev2.  I like jazz on both headphones.  I think even within the same genre of jazz, the timbre of different instruments can be preferred with one headphone over the other.  For example, I like the timbre of piano more on the HE-500 but I like the plucking sound/impact of the double bass on the LCD-2.  I think the LCD-2 does electronica extremely well.  I haven't tried electronica on the HE-500 yet.

So audition a bunch of things.  If you find that you don't like any of them then yes, consider a $1600 LCD-2.  Also keep in mind the source and headphone amp that the you are using to audition the equipment.  The Lyr will have a very lush, forward and dynamic presentation in comparison to some solid state amps.  Tubes will also matter in the Lyr.

Heck, I might even dare say get the Lyr first and see how you think that pairs with the HD650.  That might be enough brightness brought about by the Lyr that you don't want anything else.  I really enjoyed the high frequency with the Lyr.

I think if you have a resolving DAC and high power amplifier, the HE-6 would be a no brainer. Considering you plan to use the Lyr as the amp, I would go for the LCD-2 as there are many reports of LCD-2 owners being more than satisfied with the LCD-2 / Lyr combo.

Yea, I might be happy with the HD650's for a while once I get the Lyr.

I've been reading the Tube Rolling thread but it's very long so I'll have to keep on doing that to get an idea of what tubes would suit my needs the best.

But the Lyr is powerful enough to power all the headphones we've been talking about, right?

Power isn't everything and there is more power out there than the Lyr biggrin.gif

My old vintage Sansui AU-717 had gobs of power out of its headphone jack but it could not control the bass of my orthos and it would get quite bloated and congested in the lower range.

Thanks for the link, will do. I will be looking at the HD700 as well, it costs the same as the HE-500 here.

Hey, just going to interject for a moment that the Lyr+HE-6 is an excellent combination. Very clear, no noticeable noise floor and tons of detail and strong sound. Very good bass and very easy to differentiate one instrument from another in complex musical passages. The word "transparent" comes to mind and I haven't noticed any clipping or other undesirable distortion so far.

From what I can recall of trying the HE-6 with the EF-6 at a recent meet, this Lyr setup sounds great, as did that. I'd need a really close A/B session of te two amplifiers to bring out the subtler differences. The Lyr is certainly capable of adequately feeding the HE-6; so differences between capable amplifiers are going to be subtle at best (in my opinion). On the other hand, switching from Lyr to my DAC1 headphone output is an actual night/day difference.

The HD800s and LCD-2s are great compliments. Personally, I'm not a fan of the Audeze house sound or comfort so I would take the HD800.

Yea, I'll have to give them both a listen, hopefully I can do that sometime soon.

I much prefer the HE-5LE to the LCD-2, so I assuming that the HE-6 would be even more preferrable.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. :)

Is the HD-5LE some old version of the HE-500?

Why did you prefer the HE-5LE over the LCD-2? What genres do you mostly listen to?

HE-500 is not a newer version of the HE-5LE.  Really boils down to preference.  I like both Hifiman and Audeze sound signatures.  Some people strongly like one over the other.  But it's personal preference.  If you like the HD-650 I think you'll like the LCD-2. I started with the HD-650 but then again your tastes will differ from mine or anyone else's so it is great if you can try the Hifiman series at a store.

FInally I decided to get the HE-500 without hearing them as I can return them and just pay the shipping back (practically nothing).

I'll be getting them sometime next week. Can't wait!
