Issue with Hifiman EF5 - is mine working properly?

I just purchased the EF5, based on what I've read here and on other sites a couple of weeks ago.

One set of cans is an Ultrasone 900. The other, Senn 650s.

At max volume and full gain, I can listen to both headphones, comfortably. It's a little loud, and I don't always want to listen to music that loud. At other times, however, I'd like a little more than the amp is dishing out. My preconception was that...  cranked all the way... my ears should be bleeding.

2:00 is as soft as I want to go. 3:00 is comfortable. 4:00 starts going a bit into the loud range. 5:00 is loud, but at times I want more. There's no 6:00.

In contrast, when I approach max volume on the headphone jack of my home stereo (Denon AV-1400), the volume gets too painful. I guess it would be the equivalent of, the EF5 hitting 7:00 or 8:00.

Am I missing something? Is there possibly a problem with the unit? The quality of the audio is very impressive, but I thought I would get more volume.

Any ideas... feedback?

For another comparison, I connect an iPod from the Mac Connector > 1/8 into a Fiio e11 at full volume. The EF5 at full volume sounds like it's at the same volume as the e11. Just doesn't seem right to me.
