TEN YEARS! TEN YEARS! My 10 year HeadFi Anniversary!

Well, it's official.....I've been a Head-Fi member for 10 YEARS!

When I joined I was an 8th grader in middle school. I've now completed a Master's degree. My progress is all due to joining Head-Fi. wink.gif (Correlation is not causation, lol.)

I will say that in the past 10 years I think the forum has improved, and become much more tolerant of diverging viewpoints. (I don't think Uncle Erik could have been a mod 10 years ago.)

The other major change is that the diversity of products available to Head-Fiers (not just HeadRoom, Sennheiser, Grado), and the rising price of flagship headphones.

Its been a wild ride!

PS - I still don't have a custom title!

The number of active users browsing the boards has exploded.

I remember when having 250 people browsing the board was a landmark achievement, and as I type there are apparently 1800 browsing....at 5:00 am in the morning (EST), lol.

Strangely, however, posting activity hasn't really gone up in my estimated, despite 10x the number of people browsing. I think it's probably because of a very large polite lurker contingent.

If I had to guess, I'd say about 90% of the sites growth is due to the invention of the iPod. At the time no one realized the profound impact the iPod would have on the site, lol. My very first post was suggesting HeadRoom name an MP3 player they were thinking of developing "the WATTermelon". That quickly died.

The WATTermelon?  I like that.  Maybe we can convince them to restart that project.biggrin.gif

As I understand it(I wasn't a member pre-2009), before the site had the many sponsors it does now, members had the option to donate money.  You gain the status of contributor and have ad free browsing for a certain period of time.

10 years Congrats! So you must remember the good old days when the K1000 and R-10 were still selling at retail. oldgit.gif

I don't recall the K1000 and R-10 being a really big deal when they were selling at retail. The Senn HD600 and Grado RS1s (along with electrostats) were always seen as the mack-daddys. In fact, I remember HeadRoom once had an insane sale where they sold K1000 for $299 or something because they weren't selling. It was only when they went off the market that everyone went crazy over them. Make of that what you will.

If you had extra coin to spend back in those days, you spent it on a kick-ass amp for your HD600 instead of buying an R10. HeadRoom even had a $3000 balanced amp (the BlockHead) designed solely for the HD600 and RS1. Or you bought a $1000 power cable.

It was common for the amp and cables to be way more expensive than the phones. I think headphone makers then realized they were leaving coin on the table and came up with $1000+ super-headphones.
