In light of all the discussion above, would it be correct to say that the amp with the higher distortion figures sounds the most musical?
If so then the corollary would be that HiFi is anti-musical.

No, I think reasonably low overall distortion must be a prerequisite to true HiFi, if we're going to use the term "HiFi" and not "audiophile". At some point, even euphonic distortion is going to obviously color and reduce the sound quality...probably before the 1-2% THD level is reached. Then, THD is a very crude/basic metric because it says nothing as to the nature of the distortion. Bad distortion sounds bad...even in very small amounts.
The tricky thing is, at what point do you consider the removal of that last little bit of euphonic distortion to be "worse than the cure", and thus justifiable towards the pursuit of HiFi? It gets to be nebulous topic real quick. What if that little bit of distortion ends up masking flaws, shortcomings, & unnatural artifacts from the recording side of the chain? At that point, which is more true to the music, as interpreted by our senses?
In the latter segment of my experience, I've been more drawn to stuff with low overall distortion for its class but NOT the lowest THD numbers - i.e. well engineered, modern all-tube electronics and a vinyl source w/ LOMC cartridge. True, that cartridge/grovve interface is probably responsible for quite a bit of the distortion in such a system. Though I do believe the amps should have lower distortion numbers than transducers, or you need to double-check how it's been engineered.
Got to admit I've loved some fairly high-distortion gear - it can be wonderfully enjoyable (vintage tube amps come to mind), and it certainly has a place in audiophile pursuits. However, such gear is not going to reach the highest echelons of HiFi sonic reproduction.

But there are some that have heard my cries and said nothing. ;~;
i have both LF and DS.
i will see what i can do....
Very interested in your comparison TheWuss!! Cannot decided between a LF or a DS for myself :(
If you are going to use it primarily for the HE-6 I would go for the DS but if you main headphones are others specially more efficient or low impedance I would go for the LF. The DS is too powerful for the D_000, DX1000, Edition 9 or similar low impedance even in the low gain position. The high impedance like HD800, T1, etc are ok in the low gain set.
yes, jose.
i certainly agree with that.
it would have to be a fair comparison, using headphones that play well with both amps.
so far, in my experience, that would be LCD-2, T1, and HD800.
all three sound fantastic with DS and LF.
the HE-6 really isn't driven to full capability by the LF. or any other headphone amp i've heard besides the Dark Star.
i have to say, i've been pleasantly surprised with just how good the DS is with the LCD-2.
Tonight, for instance...
Two high gravity beers, followed a John Hiatt record, rendered superbly by the LCD-2 and Dark Star....
It was almost like bellying up to a steak dinner.
Scrumptuous...
The way I see it is the DS is a more complete amp. Look at all the input and output options on the DS. Cmon LF you gotta do better than that. Both amps cost north of 3k and are considered top tier amps. Still I would love to see a shot out between them and also a Audio-GD master5/6. And throw in the a EC BA into the mix.
But is the DS better than the LF with the LCD 2?

yes, jose.
i certainly agree with that.

Agree 100%
For anyone interested in having some listening time with the Dark Star or A-10 Thunderbolt II Ray will be bringing them to the Charlotte audio meet 3/31/12. More info on the link below.
Hopefully you guys will have a pair of SR-009 available. The A10/SR-009 IMO is the best combo and my dream system. I had the chance to listen to them a few months back fell in love with them. I have listen to the SR-009 with the WES and BHSE too but IMO the A10 match them perfectly.
Some day, some day
