Replacement options for dead Re0s

Hi all,

My Re0s have developed a loose cable in the R ear. Given that I've read they can be fragile, I'm going to try something new. I have narrowed it down a bit, but need some advice. First off, I listen to a massive range of music so I want something versatile for rock, jazz, blues, soul, funk, pop, classical, some R&B and hip-hop. I love my Audio Technica AD900s and my Ultrasone HFI 680s and I really enjoyed the Re0s while they lasted. Overall, I use IEMs for portable listening so I'm after something of high quality with a balanced signature, but with a musical, enjoyable sound rather than an analytical sound.

Thanks to ljokerl for the amazing comparison thread. I've used it to check local suppliers to work out my options.

Here in Australia, my options I think are:

  • Etymotic ER-4P
  • Audio Technica ATH-CK10
  • Audio Technica ATH-CK100
  • Earsonics SM2
  • Earsonics SM3
  • Shure SE535
  • Shure SE535 (red limited edition)
  • Westone 2
  • Westone 4

Which do you think will be the best value upgrade/replacement to the Re0s based on my requirements from above? I'm very happy to hear other suggestions from these same brands or if you know they're available to Australia (i.e. local retailer or international shipping without any hassles)

If you liked them a lot, then you could have the cables replaced or do it yourself.

Really? They look like a sealed unit, but I guess they had to assemble them initially.

I do like them, but would also be glad to upgrade if anyone can suggest a better option.

After further research, I'm wondering if I should add the Senn CX-980s to the list. Would really appreciate any insight people can provide here because auditioning is pretty much impossible for IEMs.

I've done further reading and research and I think I'm getting the Shure 535 reds. I do have the option to buy some Westone 4s for a similar price. Which is better as a purely portable option that's fun and easy to listen to across a broad range of music?

I'd take the 535's over the Westone's, though I don't think you really can go wrong with either one.

Thanks ravefire. That's the feeling I'm getting. Any specific reason for that?

Well, if you liked the RE0 sound sig, the Etymotics or the RE272s might be a good direct upgrade, whereas the others will have very different sound signatures.

EDIT: I see you said you liked more musical IEMs, but if you liked the RE0, maybe analytical is what you're really after.

Fair point. I should explain. I've recently been using a Fiio E11 with the bass boost set to 1 and found the Re0s more entertaining as a result. I prefer not using bass boosts or eq so figured a more balanced and less analytic option would give a similar signature without the boost. Am I on the right track with the 535 LTDs?

I haven't heard them, but I've heard Shures tend towards mid-centric, which may not be quite what you're looking for. At least from what I've read, maybe you're looking for something with a sound signature similar to the GR07s, which are still fairly detailed, but don't lack bass. How much is the bass boosted though?

I haven't tried too many of the phones on your list, but do have the Etymoic ER-4P and am extrememly satisfied with it.  It's default sound is flat and analytical, almost to a fault, but it does respond to EQ and amping to acheive a warmer sound, if so desired.  Also, the ER4 series will last you for years if you take care of it -- don't stuff into your tight jeans pocket.  wink.gif
