I'm a pretty big Alan Parson's fan, and I like that he's really sensible with his listening habits. Kind of refreshing, actually.
Alan Parson's Project is absolutely something you should check out when looking for test tracks. I recently picked up a copy of one of the albums again and was blown away.

I agree, room acoustics sound so hard to adjust, and by using headphones we put a load off our minds!
I'm also quite an A.P.P. fan, its great music and he's a great sound engineer. DSOTM would not be what it is without him.
Following his opinions is like tracking down his paycheck.
It's not too terribly complicated - just a matter of learning something new. Makes a lot of difference at the end of the day; a lot more than some equipment does (note: some). To give a very crude example - a good pair of headphones is along the same lines as a properly adjusted room with decent speakers. The speaker system will be more visceral though.
