Would a sound card make my setup sound noticeably better?

Thread Starter

I don't know if this is exactly where I should post, as I'm using speakers, but the other threads in this computer audio part of the forum seemed rather similar to what I would like to know.

Firstly, my setup:

Speakers         - Edifier S550 (5.1 speakers around the $500 mark)

Onboard sound - P7P55D-E LX (motherboard name), using i'm not sure what the name of the chipset is now, but it uses VIA's codec VT1708S version 6.0.1.8700.

Rest of the pc  - Relatively powerful/new pc running windows 7. If you need any other info, give me a yell.

I think it sounds pretty good, but I remember when I had my old speakers ($60 logitech 5.1 set), I got a sound card (xonar d1) and it sounded a lot better. Unfortunately the drivers didn't like me, or the card broke, and it only worked for a day. I currently have the EQ in the audio program/driver manager thing set to rock all the time as otherwise the sound seems less crisp. So, like in the title, I'm wondering if anyone here had an opinion on whether getting a sound card would increase the quality of my sound.

If you have any specific card you want to recommend, just about the only requirement be that the driver/program thing that comes with it, automatically fills '2.1' sound to all speakers. If you think I should post this somewhere else, tell me and I'll leave :P Thanks for any advice.

tldr: Would a sound card make my setup (onboard sound/$500 speakers) sound much better?

Yes, the onboard is your weak point for sure.  Since you have a surround sound speaker system, a surround sound card would compliment them the best.

As for your other questions, almost every surround sound compatible card will have upmix if you want to use it either CMSS-3D on Creative/Auzen cards or Dolby/DTS technologies on Xonars..etc.

You could just another D1 or a DX or DG sound card.
