Just wanted to say thanks again for the heads-up about that app DanBa, I'll be helping them test it out. Won't get to it until later in the week as I get a Galaxy Note 2 Smart Dock from Samsung tomorrow to review (will be interesting to see if/how it handles USB audio via the 3 USB ports on it, hoping the Pico will work in the same way it does via a powered USB hub), but once I can get to testing I will be sure to feedback results here.

 

If the Smart Dock can do USB audio that would make for a perfect docking solution for my lunchtime listening sessions at work :)

There is practically no limitation in Android, because Android is open source.
 
Google ignores the standard USB audio for the time being; it is not enabled on the so-called reference Google Nexus devices.
Samsung enables standard USB audio on Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Note 10.1.
 
The current Android audio mixer AudioFlinger mixes only 16/44.1 audio streams.
iBasso removes it so that the iBasso DX100 can deal with 24/192 audio streams.
 
The stock USB driver of the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Note 10.1 is intolerant with USB DACs which are not quite compliant with the USB specification.
Samsung engineers could improve their USB driver in future stock kernels.
Or some open source developers could improve the Samsung USB driver in some future custom kernels.
 
Android developers will likely tweak the USB audio like Amarra / Audirvana / … developers for the Mac OS USB audio.
May be "eXtream Software Development" is one of these guys.
“By writing a custom USB audio driver from scratch, both USB audio playback and recording will be possible for a lot of USB audio standard compliant devices.
The driver will completely bypass Android including Android's incapable audio system. The advantages of USB audio and our driver are plenty:
* Finally you will have decent connectivity to your Android device: connect mics with XLR, line inputs, instrument levels inputs, depending on your USB device
* Playback and record in 16 or 24 bit ...”

But I don’t think so, because "driver" is related to software at the kernel level.

 

 

 

 

I don’t know the iBasso DX100, but I think such a DAP doesn’t need an audio mixer module unlike a smartphone.

So far, like the quad-core Exynos powered Galaxy S III, the new quad-core Exynos powered Samsung Galaxy Note II can work with the FiiO E7, the iBasso D12, Leckerton UHA-6S MKII, the ODAC and the VentureCraft Go-Dap X; has some issue with the HeadAmp Pico; and doesn’t work with the FiiO E17.

 

So, in regard to standard USB audio, the behaviour of the Galaxy Note II is likely identical to the behaviour of the Galaxy SIII.

Ah but not enough juice to power the combo? Shame, would be nice to be able to bring just one unit instead of a separate ODAC and O2.

The combo of ODAC+O2 work fine with the ODAC being powered by the GS3. I use mine this way nearly every day. I have the ODAC mounted internally to the O2 enclosure, retaining the amplifier's batteries by mounting the ODAC board upside down below the O2's PCB.

The O2 part of the ODAC+O2 combo or a separate O2 can’t be powered by USB as per design.

So, sitting here typing this from a wireless USB keyboard while Galaxy Note 2 is connected to my HDTV via the Smart Dock. Sadly it doesn't work with the Galaxy S3, although I hold some hope that Samsung may add it in a firmware update for the S3...

 

USB audio seems not to be working via the USB ports, which is a shame. I can't rule it out until I get my Leckerton though, since its the only one I have a one piece cable for (two male ends).

 

Despite those disappointments this is one seriously cool piece of kit - played some Tekken 3 with wired controllers (PS3 and XBoX ones) earlier with a mate on the HDTV, nice! Also can confirm that if you add a powered hub you can expand the number of ports (presently working off 5 with the hub connected).
