surround sound headphone - for fps mmo

I Wish to buy a new set of headphones and possibly audio card/headphone amp to improve my gaming experience.

I play a competitive fps mmorpg, where sound is a big part of information you recive and need to react on.

There is sounds, such as when you are channeling a spell which is relatively loud. You are able to recongize which spell is being cast dependent on the sound. This is pretty easy, even with my current setup. (onboard soundcard and senheiser pc350).

Another type of sound is foodsteps, footsteps are very low volume and hard to hear. The direction from where the footsteps is comming from is also important, so u can know if someone is sneaking up on you. Therefore i need a pair of good 7.1 headphones.

I was told there is also some audio cards, that can enhance sounds and make for example the small sounds of footsteps louder. I want to be able to hear footsteps from as far away as possible.

my question is if, anyone anything they would recommend for the most optimal sound ?

my budget is max 600$ or so.

the game is called darkfall, and as far as i can see from google search it doesnt support "eax"

Ingame i can adjust a bar called "maximum Number of 3d sounds" from 8 to 512

thanks in advance !

You can basically go with X-FI based cards from either Creative Labs,Auzentech..etc or a C-Media based card such as Xonar or other.  You can also go with a DAC but they are very limited in features so for gaming people will usually pair a soundcard with a higher end DAC through S/Pdif.  This way you have all the features of the card and the higher sound quality, Amp of the DAC.

Ok thanks ! how about headphones, anything you would recommend that would be great for being able to pick up direction of sound. ? and being able to recongize small sounds such as footsteps while there is explosions?

What type of sound signature are you looking for? I my self use my DT880 pro-250 for gaming and I do play Fps and mmos also. They will give you what your  looking for.

The Creative Labs X-Fi Titanium HD and the Asus Xonar Essence STX are two sound cards that should make your Senn PC350 sound better then using on-board sound.

I prefer the Essence STX myself.

Not sure what u mean by sound signature but pretty much all that matters for me is the ability to pinpoint where people who are approaching me are comming from, and being able to hear the footsteps far away

Sound Signature, do you like your audio to sound like your in the front seats at a rock concert or a laid back sound for easy listening.

Do you like the bass detailed & sharp or just a big loud room shaking thump, just depends on how you like your sound.

The Creative Titanium HD sound card has the best all around support for FPS gaming.

I doesnt really matter at all, just want the headphones that are best at capturing surroundsound and small foodsteps.

If that doesnt have anything to do with sound signature i guess i prefer; sharp and detailed bass and laid back for easy listening

I'm guessing your looking for good "sound stage".

The Asus Xonar DG ($30) might even do the job of improving the sound of your PC350s.

AKG 701 series ($250) might be what your looking for.

You do need something better then an on-board sound to power them.

The DT880/pro-250's that I mention is a good choice for what the op is looking for, I did use the AKG 702s my self for gaming when I had them. The bass on the AKG 70# goes deep but it has bass but only when connected to a amp that giving them enough power,But you get the most outta them with a amp that's a good match for them. The in-graded amp on the Xonar DG isnt strong enough to handle the AKG 70#'s. Because of the AKG being picky with amp's,  he would need a Amp that a good match with the  AKG 70# if he decides on them.  Throu the bumps on the headband might be a issue for him. As it is for alot of people.

The DT880 250ohm/pro-250 will work with a Xonar STX, or a good External amp if he grabs a X-Fi HD PCi-e.  I don't know if hes in the usa, but Amazons sells a X-Fi HD Pci-e for $135. Then for a external amp he can look in the F/S section for Amp's and should beable to find a good deal on one.Ebay some times have good sells on DT880 250/pro-250 then Amazon some times have sells on them too. I got my DT880 pro-250 off ebay for $185 B-stock but I doubt he would find any on there now around that price. He might if he looks on the headphone F/S section. If he trust using used headphones.

Ultrasone Headphones would be another good choice, I used the HFi-780s my self when I owned them and they worked really well,They do have bass. But I don't Re-call how they sound since I don't have a collection of headphones since I never keep them when i go to a different headphone.

AD700 wouldn't be a good choice since he mention he wanted to have some bass for explosions. the AD700 lacks bass, But its closed back ver would work. The easier option for him is getting a Xonar STX since it has a good in-graded Headphone amp. That way when he decide to get a headphone that req a amp. He be all set.

if Creative Titanium HD sound card have the bets options for fps game i will definatly go with that, since thats probably the most important for me, to be able to turn "small sound volume higher" etc. A guy that plays the game recommended me that card aswell.

Sennheiser HD558 like the ATH-AD700 but with more bass.

more options :D its getting difficult ! hehe always liked sennheiser, that module would also score 10 on competive in mad lusts guide?

when i write bass isnt important its because it wont improve my gaming but its definatly a pluss if its equally good as ad700 on all the important things but also have bass

like if ad900 ad1000 ad2000 is just improvements off ad700, then thouse look really good for me since it seems like ad700 is the best for competitive games
