AKG K550 or K272 HD for Rock music?

Am still after buying a decent set of closed cans to use with my Linn hi fi and new Graham Slee Novo headphone amp.  I have a set of Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro (250 ohm) which are fantastic for the rock music I listen to but as they are open back they do leak sound. I do plan to keep these as have grown to really like them.

I have tried ATH M50's and AH-D7000 neither of which I liked with the sound on the Denons being far too muddy for me.  So I have seen the AKG K550's which get great reviews but I wonder how they would be for rock music?  I don't like overwhelming bass but it must be present.

I have also considered the AKG K272 HD and wondered if anyone had a view on these for rock also?

Thanks in advance.

Heya,

Going from the DT990 PRO, all the mentioned headphones you pointed out are going to sound very thin and cold. And if you think the D7000 is muddy, but the DT990 PRO is not, well, I don't even know how to classify what you're looking for. The K550's are nice, but the bass will be significantly less than your DT990 PRO. Also, the K272 HD will be significantly less bassy. Straight up thin sounding. I find AKG in general to just not be that musical with a handful of exceptions, and just not great for things like rock. The Q701 being one of the exceptions, but it's open-back, so not what you're looking for. I'd put you on another Beyer, the DT770. Great for rock. Also look into the Fischer Audio FA-003 (or Brainwavz HM5) and even the FA-002W. Also see the AudioTechnica A900X. And look into the Ultrasone PRO 750.

Very best,

Look into the Beyer DT 770 80ohm version.

Closed headphones with awesome bass, great for rock.
