Upgrade from XB700

So I'm looking for an upgrading and I've been reading threads all over this forum. Basically, I want better mids, detail, and soundstage, while retaining SOME bass.

1) Ultrasone Pro 900 - way out of my budget range. I'm trying to go $220 max.

2) Denon D2000 - People say this thing breaks really easily.

3) DT880/770/990 - inferior in sound quality to 1 and 2 supposedly

Surely there's some other options out there?

The D2000 durability problems have been a bit overblown, but it's still an issue if you don't treat your gear well. I'd go D2K since I never abuse my headphones.

Over blown huh? Try ordering 3 sets of D2000's from 3 DIFFERENT dealers, just to receive each of them with one of the cups mounts already broken. Then, when you call Denon CS, you are told that they aren't aware of any such issue, and that you shouldn't order Denon headphones online, but buy them in a retail store. True story, bro.

where did you hear this? also, i wouldnt lump them together. 990 is supposedly an upgrade to the 770 but 880 is quite different.

basically every headphone you listed except for the 880 is a basshead phone. for mids, detail and soundstage i'd recommend 880 above all else, as long as you can find one under $220. also, don't bother with the 32ohm version. give them the amp they deserve

Reading these forums....reviews say all three are treblehead headphones and that doesn't fly with dance music. I'm a basshead who needs to hear details.

What amp will you be using? Some of the ones on your list need some muscle behind them. After the XB700, the DT880 would sound pretty thin in the bass.

You don't need to get up to the 900s to find Ultrasones that fit your bill. The 780s might be good, too.

You know what, I think I've read enough, D2000s are the choice. I'm hoping this can last me a year or two until I can afford to splurge on the high end Audeze 'phones.

Great choice. Fantastic headphones in that price range.

They will..they are made of high quality materials. You can try some mods in the future as well.
