Hello guys
I am planning my next open headphone purchase. And I am thinking of something withing that price range. (max 400 dollars)
What are your guys thoughts about those four(4) headphones?
If any help; I am really impressed with the HD555(modded to 595) run from my X-fi Sound card.
(I have to add: I just received my ath-m50 for studying headphones. I am extremely happy with them. And I want to thank the headFi community for recommending me them)
Thank you

HE-400/HE-300 vs Sennheiser HD650/HD600
Gear mentioned in this thread:
post #2 of 582/8/12 at 12:33pmif you are not planning to add any dac or amp, get the he400 they seem really musical and engaging and most of all, easy to drive. You can disregard he300 because it is not planar and it costs almost as much as an hd600, although it is really a good value. regarding HD600VS hd650, it comes down to personal taste in my opinion. I have heard both and did not like them, too laid back for me and not easy to drive out from your x-fi sound card. thus I recommend he400 but keep in mind you will need to buy a dac and an amp soon if you want to continue in this world.
also, please tell us the type of music u listen

Thank youpost #3 of 582/8/12 at 12:34pmthe hd650s sound way different than the hd555s. my friend has the hd555s and i modded them to 595s and the hd650 blows them out of the water for me. the modded 555s still have very little bass. theres no impact or low end rumble to me. i personally like the lower higher frequencies the hd650s offer too. i would personally never buy the hd555s but i love the hd650s. i used to listen to the ath-m50 but now a days it just lays around. i moved on from them and am not a giant fan anymore.
Thank you for your replies guys
I listen mostly to trance. Some rock, pop. I don't listen to classical.
But ironicly I am not a bass head. I actually like the feeling of the HD555 that it doesn't produce so much "umph" pressure - but plays music crisp and clear, just like I like it.
I am planning on getting a DAC/AMP yes. I have always looked at the E9+E7 combo. But also the Audinst MX1.
So you think I should get the HE-400 instead of HE-300?
What about HE-400 vs the sennheiser HD6**?
I really really like the HE-400's reviews. But again - I loved the 595 sound.post #5 of 582/8/12 at 3:41pm- Digital-Pride

I you liked the HD595, you might find the HE-400 a little too dark. I would lean more toward the more neutral HD600. So many choices, it's maddening sometimes. Good luck!

The HE-400 has a much more visceral, impactful bass, without venturing into the realm of uncontrolled low end. The 650s have a more inoffensive, less tangible low end, though perfectly adeqeuate. I drove both of these off an audio-gd nfb-10se, which should have plenty of power for them.

I listened to both a few weeks ago and thought the HD-650 definitely had a little more overall personally.

The HE-400 and HD650 are similar in bass punch, though I suspect the HE-400 has better sub bass.

The sub-bass on them sounded pretty similar. The HE-400 might have a little more, but it seemed more obvious that it had less mid-bass.
Guys. Do you know if a E9+E7 combo would run the HE-400?

I think that combo would be decent with either headphone. Though, a HRT Music Streamer II and Objective 2 combo would be a better option in my opinion. It's a bit more(well more than a bit), but you get a superior DAC to the E7 and an amp that is more transparent and refined than the E9.
I am really tempted to try out the HE-400. (Because I have never listened to Planar Magnetic headphones before)
But I also am looking at the HD650.

Me too! So many choices, so little money.

Anyone else with any comparisons of the HD650 and HE-400?
