Cannot hear my Hi-Fi Audio on PC

Hi there

I am trying to connect my Hi-Fi to my PC. I have connected the red/white phono leads to my Hi-Fi in the Audio Out slots. In my PC I have connected the single 3.5mm jack into the blue socket.

I can hear nothing thought when I play back the audio cassesste (which I want to convert to mp3).

I have downloaded "Golden Vinyl to CD Converter" but it cannot detect my audio.

As an experiement I tried it through a Dell Latitude laptop. I ran the audio through one of the audio inputs and my headphones through the other slot signed as a headphones slot. I couldn't hear the audio cassette during playback wearing the headphones. However I recorded some input using basic windows recorder software and upon playback I found that it had recorded the audio cassette output and I could hear it during playback.

So it seems I have connected the Hi-Fi properly but for some reason it only partially works through the laptop (which is why I think the hi-fi connection is not the problem) but doesn;t work at all on my PC.

My available PC 3.5mm sockets are described in my user manual as: Front - Speakers; Headphones. Rear: 3x speakers surround (which I have never used); Microphone; another headphones/line out; Audio Input (Line In, recording).

I imagine I am meant to plug the phono lead 3.5mm end into the last socket described above. However I does not seem to work.

Any help is much appreciated as I would like to both hear my playback and record at the same time. If it is not possible to hear playback during recording then presumably the solution is to reconnect my hi-fi speakers to the hi-fif (I have not connected them for this exercise as it is really awkward to move them to where my PC is located.

Many thanks in advance.

Perhaps you need to select the recording device in your device manager.  You can also look under you sound / audio settings and look for the menu seen below.  It is imperative that you have the correct devices selected for both playback and recording.

you are a genius my friend!!!!!

i went into windows vista > control panel > hardware and sound > sound > manage audio devices > recording then right clicked on "line in" under the recording tab and found that in the levels tab the sound was muted!!!!!!

PCs are so damned annoying, and without people like you these problems would remain involsved!

many many thanksbeerchug.gif

on small issue that has just come up - in the "Golden Records Vinyl to CD" software it appears that it is not recroding in stereo, as the recorded output is only coming out of one speaker and only on the of the volume meteres is moving during recording.

Any ideas why this is? I have checked the balances and they are all on 100.

Perhaps you have an adapter in there that is not a stereo adapter?  Look at your jacks and plugs and makes sure they have two rings on them not just one.  It really sounds like you are either feeding the signal on one channel into your recording device or your playback is only playing to one speaker.

Check speaker connections first.

Check jacks and plugs and make sure they are stereo ( two black rings toward the tip )

Some software requires you filling up both channels.  If there is a timeline for your recording see if you need to move the audio to the 2nd timeline which will be your other channel.
