First, I should note that I auditioned these both straight out of the box, without any break-in time and then later after 53 hours of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite...

A very all-round headphone for me. Just the right one to take on the go or on holiday. Also as a DJ, nice noice isolation. Very durable so you don't have to wonder if it will break if you throw...

By all accounts, the D180 seems to be a similar machine to your D181.

The D180 (or, D180K to give it its full name) is much more old school than the D181, the D180 is a 'Car' Discman, with better dampning and so forth...
Doesn't really help in deciding what a D181 is though

The D-181 does have resume play, whereas a 2003/2004 post in another thread stated it didn't have it.
I find it to sound quite fine.

thats simpily because your collection there are all low-end gears. Having d181 compared to them i am sure they will sound fine to you but, we go picky-fi here. And d181 is not up to par with SQ offered with the current daps.

No idea about sound, but I know this is the player a friend of mine in high school had and it wouldn't die. He dropped it all the time and it got kicked into a wall. He never had a problem with it and he had it a few years.

D-180AN with 1bit Dac, Mega Bass & Groove Function sounds great with Philips HP1000.. way better than my soundcard Audigy 2zs..
D-180 has a warm sound signature and big bass boost with MB function on. HP1000 with poor source have not enough bass.. With this cd-player.. They Have decent Warm and dynamic bass.. Clarity of the highs is also very nice.
