Hello All,

It's been a number of years since I've been in the market for a new pair of 'phones for office listening.  I'm currently using Ultrasone PRO750's fed by a Gamma 2 DAC and Bijou tube amp.  I've been content but a recent change in my glasses frames has made the 750's extremely uncomfortable.  I've tried cutting channels in the ear pads to fit the glasses frames to no avail.  I find myself thinking more and more about a switch to a different pair of closed cans.

My listening is exclusively in my office, hence the closed-back limitation.  Comfort is important as I'll be wearing these 4-8 hrs at a time.  My musical taste is primarily heavier rock / metal (Tool, 'old' Metallica, Pantera, RATM, Deftones etc.) but recently I've been listening to a fair amount of blues rock (Black Keys, Pack A.D. etc.) and Prog Rock (Puscifer and the like).  I also listen frequently to down-tempo ambient electronica when I really need to focus.  I have to say that the Ultrasone's do electronica fantastically well.

I love the depth and quality of the bass reproduction on the Ultrasones.  I find them somewhat lacking in being engaging on the Rock / Metal side; I just don't find them very exciting.

I've read a great deal on the subject cans and opinions, as usual, seem to be across the board.  At present I'm leaning towards the HD-25 (not sure which variant) as I'm interpreting the reviews as these being more engaging than the other two.  I'm curious to hear more about the DT150's when paired with my musical choices.  Unfortunately it's a challenge for me to audition these locally.  The D2000 has me interested as I've heard them described as 'Grado-like' but has me worried because I've also heard them described as most definitely 'Un-Grado-Like'.

Thoughts?  Any feedback would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Charlie

Havent heard the others but gotta say the hd 25s do rock n metal great. The prat is just awesome. Cons are discomfort and somewhat harsh highs. If you are planning to listen at home d2000 might be better.

Edit: Just read your 4-8 hr comfort requirement. Don't think the hd 25s would be comfortable enough. No idea about the glasses though.

Hi There,

Denon's are definetly NOT Grado like. In fact their sound signature is just the opposite of Grado's. They are extremely comfortable but doesn't isolate sound good ( not as bad as Grado's tho )  I think you should stay away from HD-25 since they aren't so comfortable for long listening sessions.

I highly recommend Denons but best advice would be testing them at J&R to see if you like their sound signature.

Best,

Notwist

At least with the HD25, your glasses won't be pressed against your head at all, you can just let the frame rest on the earcups, just like it rests on your ears normally. They could be uncomfortable for long listening because they're on-ear but this is highly personal, since it depends on the shape of your ears.

Trying them out is the best, I myself was pretty surprised about how comfotable they are.

HD25 are a fun pair of cams. However, I find them not very comfortable for prolonged use. They sound a little bit congested too but, as far as portable headphones go, I think they are the best bang for your buck.

If you're not in need of portability and noise isolation, get the D2000, it's just a fun pair of headphones. The bass on them will be close to your Ultreasones than the HD-25s. The HD-25 sound stage was too small and it completely lacked any excitement in sound. It does isolate incredibly well for the way it looks though.

I'm this close to ordering a pair of D2000. However, I'm a little bit concerned about them being bass heavy. I am somewhat sensitive to a lot of base. I think that HD25 has just the right amount of bass and it's punchy and not bloated. Should I still give Denon's a try?

Opinions on the Denons are always extremes, there's never an in-between.  People either love them or hate them.  I myself have love hate relationship with them too but overall I love them.  Hard to comment if you'd like the bass or not without actually trying them.  I think their bass isn't too bloated or exaggerated at all, just very extended, and I guess a lot of people don't like a very extended bass.  It's like they've grown used to listening to a pair of bookshelf speakers instead of bookshelf/subwoofer or tower/subwoofer.
