chaintech vs new realtek(spdif)?

i have a new high end mobo with realtek. i have a old chaintech av-710. i will only be using the spdif out to a dac that reclocks. my guess is at this point the new realtek probably has less jitter than the dinosuar chaintek. am i right? i just really did not want to waste my time finding out. unless the chaintech was like something that was totally ahead of it's time. it was a stinking $14 sound card. sure, i have a better usb to spdif but this is just 320kbps internet radio anyways. if it is better i have no problem throwing it in the case. regardless of my lossy source.

i know this has been discussed a lot here but not in regard to these particular devices.

thanks.

You should be able to check the jitter of realtek in it's datasheet. Just get the pdf and search the document for the word "jitter", done in one minute. If you find it acceptable, then you can probably throw away the chaintech with no regrets. Else stay with chaintech :P

My gut says toss the really old Chaintek AV-710 (was a good card in it's time) and use the on-board Realtek.

(the AV-710 drivers have not been updated in 3.5 years)

Go to the Realtek website to get the latest driver/software.

(The Realtek drivers were updated less then 2 months ago)

Ignoring the driver issues with the Chaintech hardware (I'm guessing you may be able to get a newer, but generic, driver from VIA directly), the AV-710 was/is a good piece of hardware. That said, I'd use the onboard solution precisely because of the driver concern. Should be no difference either way, as I don't recall the AV-710 having any exceptional hardware/software features.

3.5 year old driver is the latest on the VIA website.

Oh, well that's just dreadful. Into the spare parts bin with that card!
