Doesbt it make sense for the iPhone line out to be both digital and analog? Can someone inform me whether this is the case?

"Welcome to head-fi! sorry about your wallet"

it is a pure analog signal from the DAC. if it was purely digital, it would be easier to bypass the DAC. Sadly only companies that paid Apple a lot of money for the encryption keys are able to do it (CLAS, FOSTEX HP1 etc)

ayway. a LOD bypasses the devices internal amp and circuits surrounding the amp or are utilized a bit before and after the amplifier like the headphone jack. the amp section and headphone jack section is the weak point of many devices and thus an LOD which is only availble to Apple and sony walkman's is used. it bypasses the amp and heapdhone jack and thus gets a clear clean analog signal straight from DAC. not using one usualy results in a muddier signal and dual amping. this is a problem for many devices..espeically androids. it's not really much of a problem and sometimes preferable to people that own DAP's like HIFIman's or Cowon's.
