what next in the audio puzzle? budget dac for laptop?

Thread Starter

Just purchased some Grado SR60i phones and L-cushs for home listening. My question is whether a budget dac and/or amp (<$60) is a worthwhile investment compared to my laptop codec (Conexant CX20582 fwiw). I've read that low impedance phones like the 32 ohm Grados won't benefit from a dac but I wanted to get some more opinions on the matter.

Having had Grado SR60i's myself, my opinion is that you'd be wasting your money to buy a DAC for them in stock form.

There's a thread here about modifying the Grado SR60i if you're a DIYer; however, if you are not, you can always look into getting them modified by one of the few services out there. I prefer to deal with stock only and have no experience with modding, otherwise I'd point you in the right direction for that stuff. From what I have read around these forums, though, modding the SR60i should yield more bang for your buck than buying a DAC or amp for it.
