Looking to upgrade my PC audio

Hi,

First post here.

I'm looking to upgrade my PC audio. I have a budget of around $100.

Current setup
Edifier S330
Superlux 662 (well, planning to buy one next week)
onboard sound :(

Uses:
Movies, Music (foobar2000 + flacs), TV (through TV tuner), Games(sometimes)

Would a fiio e10 make the sound quality of my s330 better? Or would i be better off buying a soundcard?
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unless you have expensive speakers or headphones (in which case you do not), it's always best to upgrade THOSE before thinking about replacing your onboard sound.

But failing this, you should definitely go the soundcard route versus buying a fiio e10 if you will be mainly using your speakers as output. Besides, its headphone amp (and its main selling point) is pretty pointless for the inexpensive, low impedance Superlux 662s you'll be buying. Would you buy a $1000 cold air intake for a car worth only $1000? The point of getting those 662s is that you really don't need a headphone amp to enjoy them to their fullest, and like the Grado SR60is, you'll be extremely hard pressed to hear a difference between amped and unamped sound on them (beyond that of psychological gains).

Any Creative or Asus soundcard around $100 will benefit both your speakers and your headphones. Still, you'd see a much bigger upgrade in sound quality if you were able to sell your speakers and get ones which are $100 more expensive than yours were. If you plan on using your headphones more, then the same goes for those.

i thought fiio e10 is a dac too.

so it would not improve the sound quality of my cheap speakers? any recommendations for a sub-$100 soundcard (bang for the buck)?

Yes, it would, but so would the DAC in a sub-$100 soundcard.

My main point was that with either of your current outputs, you will not see as much of an improvement by adding a DAC/amp as you would replacing the outputs themselves. It'd kinda be like buying a new videocard for a cheap monitor. If you're looking for image quality (and not performance), you replace the monitor first, dude.

EDIT: I was about to say the above is a bad analogy, but now that I think about it, it's actually spot on. If you get a top of the line videocard, things will still look like **** if you have a cheap monitor incapable of reaching high resolutions. The same goes for DAC/Amps and cheap speakers or headphones...

Asus Xonar DG sound card, $30, PCI, comes with a half-way decent headphone amplifier and Dolby Digital (Dolby Virtual headphone, surround sound).

The Samson SR850 headphones (made by Superlux) has some good reviews, $50.

Hey thanks for the suggestion PurpleAngel. I'll take a look at the Xonar DG and the Samson SR850.

As another Budget-Fi'er i'm going to get the Xonar DG-Fiio E10-Xonar ST and compare them all. It would be great if others joined along and help us all know the differences.
