Amp selection for se535?

Thread Starter

I had my eyes on the stepdance/2stepdance for quite a while now and I wonder if they would be the best choice under about 500.

I've recently also seen the Fiio e17, any thoughts?

IPC as source, would $50 for the lineout cable be enough? any thoughts on that as well?

Many thanks.etysmile.gif

Hello,

I recently sold my Fiio E11 because there was an audible hiss on my SE535ltd. You might want to check out reviews on whether e17 does too (I believe it does but to a lesser degree).

Cheers,

Lillee

I have the SE530's and am also in the market for a headphone amp. My source will be an iPod touch. Is there an amp + DAC combo that might be able to help with the high frequency roll off on the SE530's? The iPod doesn't have any decent EQ capability that I know of.

I don't think you need an amp just yet, try a 3rd party cable, probably a silver or a copper/silver hybrid. At least try to achieve the sound signature that satisfy you before adding an amp. Buying an new amp to rectify the high frequency roll off just means you are having to buy a very bright sounding amp.

I should add that I have a pair of SE535ltd and my journey with them have been as follows.

Coming from a Westone W4.

Hated the sound of the 535 stock (never liked the regular 535) used in concert with a Galaxy Note

> bought a copper/silver cable. Very nice now restriction was source.

> bought a Cowon D2+ (liked it so much bought another one- blue for male and pink for female vocals) everything tightened up compared to the Note. much better.

> bought a giant killer of an amp

> bought a copper/silver 3mm mini hybrid i/c- wow compared to free copper one that the dealer gave me

> bought a Cowon X7 loved the 160gigs storage and fast transfer speeds- richer sounding, more musicality than the D2+

> bought a silver/gold 3mm mini i/c- great with the W4 but not suited to the 535

> bought a Quad wired copper/silver hybrid 3mm mini i/c- improvement was unbelievable

> bought a Quad wired copper/silver cable for the 535- sounded great but not portable anymore, cables too stiff and noisy when walking

> bought a Quad wired 5n OCC silver cable for the 535 and the matching 3.5mm mini i/c cable. Huge improvement in resolution over the copper/silver hybrid cable but bass was lacking in comparison and therefore sounding less coherent.

At the time the copper/silver combination was still my favorite.

> bought the Triad L3- this was the game changer and in concert with the 5n OCC silver, the sound is stunning.

Realized the Triad L3 sounds much better off the mains.

> bought a Firestone Audio Supplier as a dedicated power supply- improvement was huge!

The above is in the space of 8 weeks.

Looking forward to:-

I have a silver/gold arriving early March

I now think I need a better DAP probably the Ibasso DX100 and lots of line out cables to play with!
