Got the D2000's.. upon further inspection I figured out why I don't like them..

Recessed bass mids. The bass is really good at higher levels, but for all around, the bass isn't equal and that punch isn't there if that makes any sense. For sub bass it's hardly there and that's where I think these cans are lacking. Furthermore these are pretty much open, I listen at loud volumes and I have to close my door to prevent the noise from escaping. I even bought an E10 amp but the bass boost doesn't do much, and the amp itself doesn't change the sound much at all.

So again I will be returning these.

Essentially what I'm looking for is this:

Closed

Electronica/House/Trance/Rap genres are what I listen to

Really good soundstage because I play FPS games

Bass that's punchy and good at every level, not just when the sound absolutely demands it.

It feels like the D2K only produces enough bass when it's required.. but I prefer hearing sub bass.

I was looking at the DT 770 pro 80, or one of the HFI's but I'm not sure.. what really fits the bill for my needs?

I would prefer the price to be around $200.

Did some research.. would ultrasone pro 900's be a worthy replacement?

Are you sure you know what sub-bass is..?

Nothing really beats the bass of the Pro900, although they're about double your price.

They're great for electronica but they absolutely mangle real instruments (guitar, etc)

OP you sure the problem is with the headphones / amp?

There could be hundreds of other things effecting the quality of noise you are hearing.

If you're sure there's nothing wrong with your pair of D2000's or your amp and you're just used to that much more bass, I think you should do some research on HFI 580's.

Did you break em in? Or did you make the call after you listened to a few songs? D2000 have pretty good bass. But not when brand new.

Are you listening to lossless files, vinyl, and/or CD's?

DT 770 more uncontrolled bass but bit more afaik, more highs & even more recessed mids.

I would say the Ultrasones have the biggest punch in their bass but aren't they bad in sub bass?

If you just want bass.. get the XB500.. or try them atleast.

I think there is nothing with more bass than the XB500.

this is interesting.

i'll ask what someone asked.

are you sure you know what subbass is?

and what bitrate/file quality are you listening to?

i love the subbass on the d2000s. that's what i got them for.

true, the punch of bass isn't reeeeally there and it's a bit slow, but those two factors work well for the subbass.

you shouldn't have to blast them.
i really hope you're not unknowingly going deaf. there are two kinds of hearing loss.

but hey. whatever floats your boat. if the subbass of the d2k's are unimpressive to you then i also suggest you try the xb500s.

i love the subbass of the d2000. they hit really hard imo, i love the subbass because it works really well for rap/hiphop music.

The original poster's comment makes me nervous. I'm looking to buy the exact pair of phones and want what he says he's not getting from them.

I'm thinking maybe just put on some suitable music for burn in and try them two or three days later...?

i added a pair of jmoneypads on the denons and the bass focused and tightened a notch..isolation improved...v enjoyable can.

Can be further improved with the "right" amp and powercord and etc etc etc.. its a journey of trial n error,

but hard to go wrong starting with the denon.

listening to PURPLE RAIN right this moment,

the drumms ooooooo hit so hard n firm.

The Denons don't have the mid-bass hump as some headphones out there have, but they definitely have the sub-bass.  Their sub-bass is very impactful too, but will only show up if the song requires.  Care to give specific examples of the songs you listen to?  Also, are you going line-out to the e10 from the computer or just double amping?

I think you're mistaking mid-bass for sub-bass. My Denons don't have the big bass hump of the D2000's, and the sub-bass still hits pretty damn hard. It doesn't hit with midbass (like cans like Ultrasones would).

I'm still interested in knowing what kind of files the OP is listening to,

especially because the post describes a lack of bass which isn't improved even with

an amp's bass boost added.

To me, it sounds like the source material itself is lacking bass.
