Best closed headphone under $200?

I need some headphones for use in a home studio situation. Must be closed and well isolating to prevent sound leak from the headphones to my rather sensitive mic. Currently considering the Audio Technica ATH-M50 and the Sennheiser HD 380 PRO but open to other suggestions. Absolutely no higher than $200USD as everything here in New Zealand is still way more expensive than US. Any comments/ideas would be much appreciated :)

The ATH-M50 is an amazing headphone and is probably the best choice here.  Another good choice is the V-Moda M80 / V80.  The V-Moda M80 / V70 sound little more lively and are not quite as bumpy in the mid range of the frequency response, but the ATH-M50 is an especially wonderful headphone and I do not hesitate recommending it to you.

The V-Moda M80 / V80 are on-ear, seal pretty well, and are really comfortable.  So are the ATH-M50 headphones, but the V-Moda is a bit more portable if that is a concern.

How about DT770/80's, better than M50 I think.

NA Blur, thanks for the info on V-Moda. Unfortunately I can't source them in NZ which pretty much rules them out. Good to hear more positive comments on the M50's though!

sappl3s, you may be right about the DT770's, however they are roughly twice the price of the M50's and 380 PRO's over here in NZ :(

HM5s, need I say more? You could also get the FA-003s.

once again, NZ online and offline retailers don't stock either brand...

It's looking more and more like the M50's and 380's are my best/only options. So which is better? Looking at both SQ and noise leakage

If you only consider to buy locally, then you won't get the "best" for your money.

+1 for the M-50, then again I owned this one, and have never listened to those Senn's.  I did like them quite a bit however.

kingpage, I would look overseas if anyone would ship to NZ! Amazon won't and from what I can see there are none of the headphones you mentioned on ebay (plus shipping takes an eternity US -> NZ), hence my preference to buy within NZ :)

You forgot about your close and friendly neighbour Australia. smily_headphones1.gif

I am not experience enough to really suggest one model over another from personal preference, but I would suggest looking into the Shure SRH-840's as well. I chose them over the M50's, but not for studio use (although everything I have read so far has suggested that they would be better for that purpose).

mp4nation ships worldwide (HM5s). Frogbeats (out of stock) and noisymotel ship to New Zealand (FA-003s)

My apologies to the friendly Aussies wink_face.gif

I have to admit both the HM5s and FA-003s look to be excellent 'phones and I am assuming from your recommendation kingpage that you regard them more highly than the M50s and 380s. More research to do I suppose!

The HM5s and FA-003s seem to be almost identical, with price being the only real difference??
