helppppp Replacement Can Suggestions

Thread Starter

Im new to this forum, so thanks ahead of time for the patience/suggestions!

I recently just lost my first pair of serious headphones: HD280pros. Feels like I lost my comfort blanket. Im devastated, my days are grey, and my music sounds awful now haha

When I bought them my friend was trying to convince me to get ATH-ES7s, which I stupidly ignored.

Overall I really liked my HD280s for what they were: I found the sound to be slightly flat, but they were SUPER comfortable. Certainly not the most "fun" pair of cans though.

Now Im thinking that I want to try something new, a more fun set of cans, but I really don't know which way to go. I wanted the ath-es7s, but apparently they don't make them anymore.

Any personal suggestions for something thats not as flat as the HD280s in the 100-150 price range?? Im considering the M50s, but not quite sure. Im looking for something with a little more bass than the 280pros, but not super "wompy", mildly good looking, and not necessarily noise isolating.

Thanks Head-Fiers!!

Shure 840! Nice mid bass hump, generally pretty flat but more resolving and more fun than the 280 Pro.

excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does resolving mean in layman's terms? Individual sounds or frequencies are more distinct from each other and therefore clearer???

In terms of clarity and driver speed - the 840 has it over the 280 Pro yes.

This was taken from another thread. I typed it. it worked for what you might want so i just copied and pasted it

Ultrasone HFI 580 fits those departments perfectly. I don't have the M50's but i was looking at between them and teh HFI 580's a long time ago

http://www.head-fi.org/t/531691/review-ath-m50-vs-hfi-580-vs-sr-80

http://www.head-fi.org/t/556509/review-battle-of-the-entry-level-rivals-ultrasone-hfi-580-vs-audio-technica-m50-vs-pro700-mk2

and after reading the two

i made my own thread and asked how it will do

http://www.head-fi.org/t/583344/ultrasone-hfi-580-dj1-review

i changed it into a review but if you go past the main review i wrote. teh initial question and responces are all still there :D

They are $137 on BH and Amazon, but the usually go for $190. they work well un amped and the long wire can be braided(i did) it also responds very well to amping in case he thinks the bass or treble isn't enough.

the review for the HFI 580 is in my signature in case you are wondering. I also have the SRH440's whic is the 280pro's cousin (in terms of recommendations) and is more analytical and less bassy than the SRH840 but with very similar qualities and things...so ask me anything i guess.

i guess my concern about the SRH440s would be that they're too similar to the 280pros i.e. flat/neutral.   I will definitely look into those HFI 580s. but how about the SRH440s compared to the Shure 840s? Substantial difference or minor spec boost???
