Closed headphone suggestions for ~$200 for a friend - Page 2

Well you're not going to get "surround sound" from any closed headphone around ~$200, correct?

Good point about the Ultrasones, somehow I missed that / confused headphone graphs. So the Ultrasone HIFI 580 is back on the list I guess.

Where is the HIFI 580 in terms of relative quality vs M50 and SRH840?

you should have him go down to a guitar center. and try out the HFI 580s, ATH M50's, and SRH 840's and a Beyer DT770 32 ohm (just in case) why not.

Senn PX 360.

Might be worth a look.  Seal really well (keeping noise in and out), are super easy to drive, and to my ears had a lot of bass.

ATH-M50! They are really easy to drive (off an iPod) and deliver a great, flat sound for the price. They leak a little though and i found them uncomfortable at first.

Flat?  I didn't find them flat but more U shaped.

TO each their own I guess

ATH M50s are definitely U shaped, no question (from what I heard). But this person wants bass boosted somewhat.

I'm not sure why people dismiss the Beyer's without having listened to them.

I have the DT 770 Pro80's, and they are real easy to drive. I occasionally use them with my ipod nano, and the sound is just fine.

Even the Beyer website says that the 32Ω and 80Ω version are made for portable devices.

The 770's have fantastic bass, are extremely comfy, and are a great closed set of cans.

They are pretty easy to find as well (amazon?).

When I was deciding on a closed set, I actually auditioned the Shure SRH840 & Audio Technica M50 (among others), and my deciding factor came down to comfort.

Personally, I didn't like the 840 sound. The M50's sounded great (and even made the Beyer's sound thin in comparison), but the DT770's comfort was just outstanding

(which is a big deal for me because I wear them for hours on end). I have since bought the M50's as a portable set, but always reach for the Beyers at home when I want closed headphones.

edit: the M50's are definately U shaped to my ears. And the DT770's have better isolation.

I'm not sure if you can still get them for this price, but last year I picked up a pair of Denon AH-D2000 for $200 at J&R.  Give them a call and you might still be able to.  Just another suggestion.
