Desktop DAC/Amp Combo used as a preamp

Hi all,

I just picked up a new power amp for my stereo setup.  I have the option of using my Nuforce u-Dac as the dac and preamp (computer as the source), but the volume control on the udac is pretty weak...  Furthermore, the udac is nice for the price, but leaves much to be desired.

Can anyone recommend me a usb DAC/Amp combo for under $250 ish?  I'm very much open to tubes if it can fit in the budget.  I have no limitations as far as size (it can be huge for all I care).

Would the nuforce Icon fit the bill here at all?

Thanks!

Interesting question.

I'm going to watch and see what happens.

I'm interested in one myself.

Have you looked at the Matrix Electronics stuff?   I think you would have to stretch your budget a bit, though.tongue.gif    Matrix does not make tube stuff.   frown.gif

I did have a look at Matrix; the cube really stands out as a maybe.  A tad pricy, but perhaps I can find one used.

The maverick looks REALLY good!  So does the Zero DAC.  Can anyone comment on those?
