I may just end up going with the AD900s as I have been eyeing them for a while then mod my AD700s with a shorter cord so I can take them with me to work and listen to them from my phone.

EDIT: sorry for the double post

Bingo - just what you need according to your post - it's still an AD700, just better all round. The AD900 is a good alternative

to something like a K601 or K701/Q701 if serious amping is not likely to be part of the setup.

Thoughts?

EDIT: For budget reasons, I am going to go grab a FiiO E17 Alpen and a E9 desktop amp.

250 + 150 + 100 = 500 for sound XD

You'll find the bass on the AKG to be not very much more than you're used to. The Q701 will have a bit more bass presence. But otherwise, you're just getting a more expensive headphone that is pretty similar to what you already have. And it does need amplification. You could just get the AD900 and not have to spend the extra on powerful amplifiers (though I will say it's a great idea to get the E17 regardless; but the E9 would not be needed).

At this point, you just went to a $500 budget. You might as well look at way better headphones. HD600, DT880, etc, come to mind.

Very best,

I don't think the SR125i's would be a good upgrade. They have a reputation for being a tad bright I believe, compared to the rest of the "prestige" Grados. I think you'd find most Grados to be a little too grainy in the high end compared to your AD700's to be honest. The SR225i's are better and might put up some better competition, but if you want to try a Grado, I would just stick with the SR-60i. You'll find them to be a nice upgrade for some types of music, period, because Grados have a really nice impact that works well with rock music that the Audio Technicas can't quite match, and you won't have to invest too much. Also, you'd be getting a different headphone...the AD900's are going to sound quite similar, although definitely better. For example, I use my Senn 600's for some music because they're clearly better than my Grados, and I use my Grados for some types of music because they're clearly better than my Senns...for that music.

I want something more than the AD700
