Compliment headphones for DT 990 Pro?

Sup guys! I bought a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pros a few weeks ago and I absolutely love them! Properly amped up, the bass is ridiculous and often makes me feel as if I have two subwoofers attached to my head or I'm sitting in the middle of an IMAX theater (this is a good thing because it isn't muddy at all!). The soundstage is fantastic and I almost feel like I'm cheating when I play FPS games.

Couldn't be any happier!

But I'm not looking for some headphones to compliment them. I'd like something with preferably less treble, more forward mids and possibly less airy (smooth?). So in other words, I'm pretty much looking for the polar opposite of the DT 990, at least in-relation to the aforementioned qualities (I don't mind if the headphones are open, but I would love some better isolation). HOWEVER, these headphones NEED some decent bass because pretty much everything I listen to largely incorporates bass into the listening experience.

My budget is $250.

I've already thought about:

AKG K701/702: I heard they also have rather sharp treble and are severely lacking bass. Again, I've also heard that they sound rather metallic and sound very airy. However, they are very neutral, which is probably one of the last things that the DT 990 is.

DT 880: I've thought a lot about these, but I'm worried about the mids; I've heard that they are also slightly recessed (albeit less than the DT 990s). More importantly, and from what I've gathered, they are "Un-EQ'd" DT 990s and are basically more neutral and thus retain the same sound signature (more or less). I would also like the novelty of owning headphones from a different company.

Heya,

Sennheiser HD650 sounds like something you might be interested in. Another option is the Ultrasone HFI 2400. Also look for a Denon D2000 (or D5000 really if you can save up and nab one used).

You are not going to like any of the AKG's if you're looking for bass in your tracks. Some like them, but knowing you like the DT990's bass, you're going to just not like the AKG approach to bass. You're a basshead.

Very best,

Very best,

I don't know about those Ultrasone's. They seem to be a pair of bass monsters (just like my DT 990s) with recessed mids (JUST like my Dt 990s), so I honestly don't think that it would be worth getting them.

How are the Grado Sr225i's? I've heard they've got really aggressive mids and are relatively "clear", with just enough bass so that I wouldn't feel underwhelmed listening to electronic music.

Heya,

The SR225's are going to be a very different sound. Bright, forward and impactful mids and treble. The bass is there, but it's more about impact and less about sub-bass. So you'll get hit with mid/upper bass, but nothing in the lower end. So a lot of electronic music loses it's oumph since the big bass you likely love in electronica is in the 30hz to 55hz range which the SR225 is just not going to really do. Grados in general just don't do electronica justice I find. If you want to hear guitar like no other, the Grado is great for that. Otherwise, meh, I'd look elsewhere for your genres.

You can usually get HD650's used for about $300 if you save up a tad more.

Very best,

It sounds like you want something like the Denon D2000 or Ultrasone HFI-680.  Like MalVeauX, I also dislike Grados for electronic music.  No sub-bass and too small a soundstage.

How are the mids on the HFI-680? I've heard a person or two say that the bass overpowered the mids.

Forget what I said earlier about bass. What I really meant was that the headphones need to have just enough bass so that it isn't detrimental to the overall experience. Ya know? Just enough to give violins and cellos some body and oomph and so that electronic music doesn't sound pathetic.

Thanks for all the help guys! I'm currently looking at the HD 600s but I'm very worried about the "Sennheiser veil". The only amp I have is a Cmoy and a Little Dot Mk II and that isn't going to change for the next year or so.

Denon D2000 shares the same overall frequency response as the DT990.  I don't think it'd be as much a complement as a replacement.  The polar opposite of a Beyer in my opinion would be a sennheiser hd650.

Yeah...I don't want more of the same or even more of the same but "better". I want something that's "different". What's the cheapest you've seen the HD 650s or HD 600s on Amazon? It looks like it is definitely down to those two cans unless someone can point out something else.

Because the prices have been fluctuating a lot. I saw DT 880s @ $210 on Amazon sometime in December and now the cheapest I can find them are $300.

I'd probably go with the HD650 as polar opposites myself. Maybe the HE300 as well?

The only Sennheiser with the veil is the HD650--it truly is a dark headphone. The rest are not at all laid back. This is a huge misconception that is out of control on the internet.

i would suggest hd 650 as well, the hd 600 might be too bass light for you.

and definitely do not get k701, they have good bass, but only off a decent amp, and even then people find them "light".

the dt 880 shouldn't have recessed mids as long as you get the 600 ohm version.

my 990 600 ohm doesn't have recessed mids, they are very nice tbh.

Then I suppose the HD-600 it is.  The thing is that you want less treble than the DT990, yet you also don't want a "veil," and a to a degree, those are competing goals.  The HD-600 is probably the best compromise there.  The HD-650 is quite dark and treble-shy.

through out head-fi the akg k 601 is considered a great compliment for the dt 990 pros .and you can get them for just about the same price(now)
