Looking for some good unbiased advice for headphones

Okay so i am a newbie here, and maybe ill get trolled to heck, but here i go anyway

So i am in the market for a closed back headphone, one with decent amount of bass but the mids and highs are not destroyed. and lots of comfort for long listening sessions. Id prefer not to have IEMs because i just don't find them very comfortable. I prefer that theyd be more portable. I plan on listening to them on long bus rides. (on the track team at college). But they will also be my main set of cans (at least for now) seeing that i only have astro a40s for gaming besides these.

Like i mentioned i am in college and plan to listen around others so i want to keep the sound leakage low. And id prefer them to be aesthetically pleasing as well, although its not a complete necessity. Want to keep my total Under 300

Btw i will be using an ipod to listen with. And i listen to all types of music exempting mainly just extreme heavy metal. So a good across all genre headphone is preferable.

A little other background.  So i had/have another post going atm, but i pretty much decided on the beyer dt770s 80s despite their portability hindrance, seeing as they pretty much fit every other quality i want. Btw their help was amazing and i couldnt have asked for more. This is a great site! But......the more i thought about it the more it seemed like a bad idea. Hear are my basic reasoning

1) kinda big for this purpose and hard to wear around neck from what i can see. plus cases are hard to find and they dont really fold down at all.

2) to sound good they need a decent amp, and seeing as fiio e11 is my best bet i add another 60 dollars to the already 185-199 price tag

Okay here comes the trolling part now:  I have Been looking at the soul sl150s. I know i know they are in no way audiophile grade and probably arn't worth the price, but ive read some good reviews and heard they arnt as bad as many thought they were gonna be. Here is my reasoning for at least considering them

1) they are portable: they fold up nice and come with a case and everything. And the cable also detaches which to me is a plus.

2) they do look pretty cool (white) at least in my opinion. (i do like the beyers looks btw)

3) They do not need an amp and couple well with an ipod.

Now why i havnt got out and got them.

1) like i mentioned probably not worth the price.

2) sound quality isnt going to be as good as those of the beyers, or actually many other models of heaphones, such as the ath-m50s.

3) the build quality can be questionable, although I've heard they seem a little fragile, ive not heard many cases of huge problems in this category. (dt770s are built like a tank from what i hear)

The sl150s obviously have some pluses which make them seem more attractive to me.  they are 199 for everything that i am asking for. Compared to the Beyers 199 for the heaphones, 60 for the amp and 20-30 for a case or bag bring the total after all is said and done to basically 300 dollars. 100 more than what the sl150s would be.

Now i am in no way set on the sl150s!!!! at all!!!! I really hope someone can convince me to stay with the beyers seeing as their sound just seems soooooooo attractive to me. Maybe someone can give me some suggestions to help their portability, which would really help my decisions to go with the beyers. I really want them!!! It just seems like the extra 100 for them may not be worth it, especially with the difficulty in portability involved.

Otherwise maybe somebody can perhaps suggest a different brand. I have looked at the ultrasones, but the comfort just doesn't do i for me. Looked at the ath-50s as well, but they also seem a little big for portable. I've done a ton of research already, but hey maybe i missed something

Any advice at all that i can get would be extremely helpful.

Thanks in advance

Edit: should mention in case it makes a difference, but ive never heard a really good quality headphone, probably the best ive heard are my astro a40s, and they arnt great for music, and the not the best for gaming either ha but i gottem cheap off a friend biggrin.gif so cant complain.

The Sennheiser HD 25-1 II is one of the most-commonly recommended sets of portable headphones around these parts, and they may be worth checking out. They're also cheaper than the Souls, at least on Amazon. Another alternative that some people (like me) really enjoy but that others don't care for as much is the AIAIAI TMA-1, which runs for around $200.

Im not really a fan of the size of the hd25s (ear cup wise), and im not sure i would like the typical senn sound stage. Havnt head of the tma-1 but maybe ill take a look at them, but the ear cups dont look all that big either.

But thanks i check um out!!

Heya,

Beyer DT770 PRO is the way to go here. Great sound. Great bass. Good isolation. Very durable.

If you want something more portable, explore DJ styled headphones like the Shure SRH750 DJ. But I would worry less about how they look around your neck and more about how they sound and feel on your head.

Very best,

I'm a newbie too!

It's funny because I was hunting for the sl150 reviews when I ended up in this addicting place. Haven't been able to get out since blink.gif

I found this page really useful, it has lots of other portable headphones you can check out.

Personally I love the Bowers & Wilkins P5. They are so sexyyy haha

So you think that the portability is doable then? That was my initial thought and then i started second guessing myself.  I still really want to think so!

And sorry i didnt mean like how they look around my neck, i just meant that if i took them off, to take a break or talk to somebody or something of that nature, it would be hard to keep around my neck with the size of the cups. Sorry about the misunderstanding there.

So they are worth the 280-300ish dollars when including the amp then?

As for the 750djs, i looked at them but again the comfort just wasn't doing it for me. I don't mind on the ears when they have bigger ear cups or softer pads to lessen the pressure or even better, both! but i much prefer circumaural headphones. just my preference

Heya,

A DT770 PRO should run roughly $150 on Amazon (used is a great way to go when on a budget). Also, look for a used Fiio E11 (here in the forum you can find them for sale). You'll be good to go.

I've not had an issue with Beyer cup sizes around my neck when not listening. Felt fine to me. If you're really small or have a really short neck, maybe it would be odd, but otherwise it should be fine.

Very best,

Not a huge fan of buying used products tbh. More comfortable buying something new and knowing the condition it is going to be in when i receive it (unless they are ruined in shipping) but maybe in this case ill consider it. Otherwise, any other dealers besides amazon that you can think of?

And thank you for putting me back on the beyer train, it feels good knowing that a current user believes it to be definitely doable!

if anyone else still wants to weigh in with opinions, ill still be taking a little more time to decide, so i am still open to ideas and thoughts, i encourage them!

Alza, I hate the Sennheiser "house" sound and I can say that the HD 25-1's sound nothing like normal Senns. The mids are great, the highs are good, but can sometimes have a little accentuation in the  extreme upper range (often called 'sizzle'), and the bass is really solid.  I consider them a great all-around headphone. The only genre they don't do well is classical, as they don't have an expansive soundstage and not terribly "airy" sounding.

I swore off Sennheiser for years....till I heard the HD-25's. If at all possible, I would try to find either a shop in your area or look for a head-fi meet. These cans are pretty darn popular, so chances at hearing them should be pretty good.

Very best,

So i did a quick profile peek on you, and i saw that you had a long list of headphones that you owned, or have owned. Among them i saw the v-modas crossfade lp and m80, from i can see they pretty much fit every category that i required.

Detachable cable

Durability

Good Sound (m80 specifically)- stronger bass

Portable-Work well on ipod devices, thus no amp necessary

IMO the look good as well

And on amazon they are reasonably well priced

The only downer is that i've heard they are not the most comfortable things in the world, but they are not completely terrible.

So i was wondering what your take on these were, i've seen that the lps sound is a little disappointing, which is a bummer seeing as they are the around the ear model.

If you could, maybe you can give me a quick run down on the m80s and lps. Maybe even a quick comparison to the beyers and the ath-m50s as a reference. Id really appreciate it!!!

Thanks in advance

I was also going to suggest v-Moda M80. I haven't really heard them myself but I handled either an M80 or Crossfade LP at the Apple Store and build quality seems nice. Radio Shack may also carry them and either has a decent return policy, so you could spend time trying them out.

Having said that, I have Senn HD25s and they are highly recommended for a reason

Yeah the build quality from what i can tell is amazing. Doing a little more look up on the sound but they do look solid overall.
