Surround sound from PC to regular headphones for movies

Is this possible to do so or do I need to purchase hardware (sound card, surround headphones, etc.)?

Is there any kind of software that will decode the surround sound and feed to the headphones out to mimic the surround effect?

Heya,

 

Dolby headphone.

 

(though I don't like how dolby headphone sounds, I find that when I set VLC to output 5.1 and have it optically sent to my DAC, it sounds fantastic so I don't use any funny software or anything to mimic it)

So if I change output to optical out (computer) and feed into my DAC, even though DAC is just 2ch, the sound will be surround?

Negative...you need a sound card that can output analog stereo Dolby Headphone. Other option would be to output DD or DTS over HDMI to a device that can turn that into stereo Dolby Headphone, like a recent home theater receiver.

I currently am outputing from my computer to a home theater receiver (DD and DTS) via optical toslink.

Does this mean if I just plug my headphones into the receiver, I get surround sound?

No, very few receivers support surround sound for headphones.

Yamaha's come with Silent Cinema which provides surround sound for headphones.

Some Marantz receivers.

 

A cheap way to add surround sound from a computer to headphones is the Asus Xonar DG (PCI) sound card, $25-$35.
