Best closed headphones I had heard - very flat response, almost no midrange distortion, very easy to drive (good for portable), good soundstage (definately better than K240), good isolation, but...

Overall excellent buds, very good sound quality, especially for their price, the medium set of tips fits exactly in my ears and provides a near perfect seal. Bass is very detailed, but not...

Hello
"Welcome to Head-Fi! Sorry about your Wallet!"
i have a review on the hfi 580's. some of your questions may be answered by reading it. i do not have the pro 550's so i won't comment on them. but i hope my review does place some...what you call it, answers to self.
The HFI 580 with an amp. has capabilites of hitting Sony XB500 bass levels btw.

Thanks, I read it before I bought the 550s but I heard the 550s were just improved
580s, in that they had a better sound stage and tighter, faster bass. I wasn't able to find much on the 550 but I figured I'd just go ahead and try them out despite the 580 hype. I might just buy the 580s and return the 550s if I get enough opinions on them. But the main thing that I like about the 550s are the detachable cables, so if the cable breaks I don't have to completely replace them.

From reviews, the HFi580 has more punchy bass where the pro550 has more soundstage.
The xb500 has more punchy bass but the overall SQ is much better concerning the HFi580.

I can't A/B the XB500 with my HFI580 and E17...as i don't have XB500's..but wow. EQ +10dB (it's been measured to be about +14dB) is just amazing. teh 50mm mylar drivers just rock everything you throw it.
Soundstage on the 580s is very small, they are very much 'in your face' sounding and fairly fatiguing after an hour or so. The pro550s soundstage is larger and sounds a little bit more distant than the 580s. For me i much prefer the pro550 'distant' sound to the 'in your face' sound of the 580s.
Bass quantity of the 580s is just shy of the xb500s, eq it slightly and you'll have yourself an xb500 with much greater mids and highs. Pro550s bass is roughly 20% less than the 580s, this is speaking in terms of impact. The 580s bass quality is just slightly better than the pro550s as it sounds slightly more pronounced (maybe due to the in your face sound of the 580s).
The comparison is made from an e10. Unamped the bass from both sounds very similar.
