FiiO E9 + laptop help D: !!!!

Hey yall,

 

So I got my FiiO E9 in the mail last night to kick my Senn HD600's into maximum overdrive. I took it out of the box, read the manual, plugged everything into my ASUS K53SV-A1 laptop just like the manual says.... aaaaand nothing happened. The USB port just doesn't seem to even acknowledge its presence. Anyone know what's up? Please help, I have some new music in FLAC that I'm just dying to hear with this setup D:

The E9 itself wont play over USB as it's "only" an amplifier.

That means you either have to feed it via the line-in connection on the back, e.g. directly from ur Laptop via a 3.5mm cable, or you buy E7/E17 from Fiio and dock it into the E9. In this case the E7/E17 will serve as a DAC, it then uses the data from the USB connection.

Dang it!!!! Do you think that a place like Best Buy would have a spare 3.5mm cable? Cuz I don't exactly have the cash to buy an E7 :/

I'm gonna assume you're going to hook up the 3.5mm cable from the headphone jack on the laptop. That is potentially worse than just using the headphone jack alone. You should've done your homework about how amps and dacs work. The E9 has been mentioned a million times not to function alone through the USB, as the USB is for when the E7 and E17 are docked.

For a few dollars you can order a 3.5mm (mini jack) to 3.5.mm (mini jack) cable (3ft, 6ft, 9ft, etc) on the internet.

You would plug one end into the speaker(line out)/headphone output of your laptop and the other end into the line in on the E9.

 

For $32 you could order a Fiio D5 USB/DAC, You would plug the USB cable from the USB connector on your laptop to the USB connector on the Fiio D5.

Then run a RCA (red/white) to 3.5mm (male) cable from the D5 to the E9.
