You're incorrect to assume that. The source quality is crucial, especially with more transparent amps.

I doubt the guys from HiFiman would exhibit their flagship products with bad source. But who knows... :)
I had extensive listening session on one of the biggest hi-fi shows in the world.
Anyway, everyone is free to like or not specific sound.
Hi-fi shows are not ideal for forming opinions, just my opinion.
...and an opinion shared by most intelligent folk I feel. Meet/show impressions are nearly worthless IME.
Yes if you have to appreciate some good and neutral gear but they're good enough to hear some prominent features of non-neutral systems :)
oops

Since I am drunk right now, I might as well mention that the Hifiman phones are far more comfortable than the Audeze ones and that the Audeze headphone cable connections are far superior to Hifiman's. As a drunk, I will say that the LCD2 seems more musical while the HE6 seems to be more accurate. I will say that you should all take this with a grain of salt for now. I bought the Schitt/LCD-2 used, and hence broken in, while the HE6/EF6 are brand new with about two hours of use...also I am drinking. I just got back from Afghanistan and fully intend on sobering up, spelling right, and doing as many combo swaps as possible between equipment to help anyone else before I start to sell stuff(in which case all sold equipment is amazing:} at this price it should be)...but then again a drunken man's words are a sober man's thoughts and the Hifiman really is more comfortable. That is probably all I should post for now...but stay tuned...I will be sober eventually and on the non-portable front I will report on DACs: Bifrost, MiniMax Plus, Peachtree....Amps: Lyre with multiple tubes, EF6, Peachtree...Headphones: HE5LE, HE6, LCD2....and that is just for the Ultra high end stuff and honestly all three headphones apply
Here is to having fun or wishing you were dead while listening to great music....in any case I know most of us can't audition everything and I hope my future observations help someone out. I also hope that something is a price winner here, but even drunk I kind of doubt it.
When are you coming back to Afghanistan? I'm in Bagram so bring some gear!
I've been a bit busy with a new business to check in around here much lately.
I'll just assume you don't know who you're talking to/about. I have heard pretty much every "summit-fi" level headphone, multiple times, and generally in a number of different systems/configurations (in fact I'm one of the few people out there that the Qualia actually fits/works well for). My opinions are based off a wide and deep knowledge of the high-end headphone scene, which I have been around for bordering on a decade now. I don't sugar-coat, and I don't fake it.

Sad when such an experienced head-fi member has to defend his reputation this way....
Iron_Dreamer has great ears and is one of the few head-fi members whose opinions I trust. I think 90% of the time I have heard a "summit-fi" rig, Iron_Dreamer has been close by to listen to it as well. You can trust what he says even though YMMV.
The German magazine AUDIO recently reviewed and measured the EF 6:
- flat frequency response
- signal to noise ratio at the headphone out is only 75 dB, which surprised them
- low distortion at low levels (below 1 V) but it's rising steadily to about -65 dB at 2 V into K701's
Interesting, is any of that review online in any form?
I doubt it was designed with the load of a K701 in mind, so I'm not sure how relevant that info is to the amp's primary capacity, driving the HE-6, which is quite a different beast.
The loads presented by the 701 and the HE-6s are gonna be pretty similar actually, the impedances are very close across the entire range. The difference being that the HE-6s requires significantly more power, which would only cause distortion to go up further most likely. though i guess more measurements would be required. Maybe we can keep our fingers crossed that tyll will get around to testing the EF-6
