It depends on the music and headphone. For most metal, especially when bass is buried in the mix, I like bassy headphones. But you don't want a flabby bass. Punch + speed is what I like.

There are also different kind of Metal. Gothic or I might say even Doom Metal doesn't need fast bass. Speed Metal on the other hand need it to be as fast as possible (If you don't want to feed oatmeal to your ears).
"Bass Heavy" is also highly subjective matter ! As I looking for a new headphones myself I stumble upon all kind of contradictory opinions regarding "Bass Heaviness" of the headphones. Some says ATM50 is bass light and point out Creative Aurvana, others will say Creative Aurvana bass is muddy and is not fast.
I really wish all the reviewers of the headphones were pointing out before review what kind of music they are listening to.
Simple example. I am currently using HD202 - which are OK phones. For Power Metal, which I am listen to, they are not bad. They produce nice bass, but lack in punch and its also bleed in to the mids. But as I said overall sound with EQ tuning can be satisfactory. BUT give them electronic music with some UBER powerfull bass inside, and those headphones simply dies ! They cough and chew sounds ! So the genre does matter...

even better, the dt 990s are great for rock/metal. i still prefer grado rs1 or 325 though.
usually 325 is unlistenable on newer recordings due to bad mastering and loudness.
