Trying to upgrade my Denon AH-D2000

Hello Head-Fi.org,

Over the past weeks, I've been researching new headphones to replace my already owned Denon AH-D2000s.  I first off would like to say I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the sound quality of these cans!!!!  I've had them for a couple years now, and they still work like a charm.  The very known problem of the screw coming apart from the headphone, has unfortunately been a problem for me though, for a couple months now. It hasn't been much of a bother to me, however, simply because I would just put the screw back in place, and it would be as if it never happened...until I took them off my head.  I was a little disappointed on Denon's build quality of this product.

Moving aside from that, I'm looking for a new pair of headphones, with a similar sound quality of the AH-D2000s.  However, of  course, I'm looking for something even better.  Having them for so long and listening to them for so many hours has made me absolutely demand bass and kick.  With that, I also need a fantastic overall sound quality with the highs, mids, and lows (for example I listened to a pair of Dr.Dre Beats...and threw up in my mouth a little, hahah).

My purpose is simply to listen to music on my iPod or computer, with some serious high-end sound.  I am a DJ, and I absolutely love using my audiophile cans to mix at home.  I love to listen to Trance and House music, which does demand lots of bass and kick.  I listen to that style of music 90% of the time, however I listen to just about everything.  I appreciate every style of music and have quite a number of tracks in every genre.  So I'm not looking for just bass, of course.  I, right now, don't own a headphone amplifier, but am considering getting a small one, meant for an iPod.

I'm posting to you all, asking for your recommendations on a great new pair of cans, so I can continue to enjoy listening to music and what ever else as much as I am now, or possibly even more ;).  My budget isn't too bad.  I would say the most expensive headphone I've been looking at are the Sennheiser HD-650s.  I am, however, a little picky.  I love a closed-back headphone, for I don't like much sound leaking in and out of the headphones (I understand the HD-650s are open back, I'm not too picky, but I'd much rather have a closed back headphone).

I've been leaning more towards the Beyerdynamic DT 770-Pros, however, I'm quite lost on what to get.  Thanks for any help!! :)

DT770-80Ω isn't really an upgrade over the D2000s.  Some people consider the Pro900s to be, and some consider them to not be.

right, of course my first look was the DT990 Pros, however, as an open back headphone, I feel the bass will be a bit cut out

Heya,

I wouldn't rate anything you've listed as better than the D2K's. Some will argue the HD650, but I don't care for the HD650 at all, and the D2K has way more kick and better sub-bass and I prefer a brighter signature, but this is merely my preference. DT770 will not stand next to a D2K in any regard in my opinion. Also, having them too, well, all of these headphones, I will just say that the D2K is my preference over them. That said, I'm also very much into closed headphones in general. My current favorite is the Denon D5000. I like it better than the D2K. And it didn't cost me much more than the cost of a D2K so it was a no-brainer. Definitely liked it better too, warmer, a touch more bassy and woodback. The mids are better and the treble is about the same. Just an excellent headphone. If you want something closed and better than the D2K, you're going to be hard pressed to find it for your budget (you are talking about $300~400 headphones right now, but what you're asking for is going to be a higher end AudioTechnica, Ultrasone or Denon for closed back options that are actually worth while; and even then, the AT and Denon are likely your better bets for overall performance).

So you could go ahead on a $500~700 headphone. And a proper DAC/AMP. So budget for $1000 roughly just to be safe.

Or, you can just use some lock-tite on the screw on your D2K's and never worry about the screw moving again.

Or you can start looking into open-air headphones. But for your budget that I'm assuming is $300~400 due to your mentioned headphones, you're not going to find something necessarily better than the D2K's, and certainly not something that has better sub-bass and impact. So I guess you should start hammering out what you're looking for and what your real max budget is. So far, I'd just stay with the D2K and make the screw not move, or look towards a higher Denon like the 5K or 7K.

Very best,
