ATH-M50 or V-Moda M80. The V-Moda are not around the ear, but they are very comfortable and seal well enough for me.
I have used both and currently own the ATH-M50, but the V-Moda has a flatter frequency response and remains a bit more portable.
Open headphones typically do two things better than closed headphones. They typically have a bigger soundstage and more controlled bass. Both have to due with air flow. Open headphones can be better than closed headphones in that they do not have boomy bass. Of course this is not always the case. Headphones like the LCD-2 and the DT990 are examples of open headphones that do really well with bass. The Denon AH-D2000 is a very good closed headphones, but at times, the bass can be boomy if not controlled well by an amp.
Neither the ATH-M50 or V-Moda M80 will keep out plane noise. I tested my ATH-M50 on a plane and had to turn the volume to full just to hear the music which is extremely bad for your ears. For airplanes use a noise canceling headphones or a good sealing IEM like the Brainwavz M2 with Comply T-400 foam tips.
The ATH-M50 has made it to the top of many of our lists especially considering you can find them for under $130. They still sound amazing out of my headphone amp. The V-Moda M80 is just a bit cleaner and extends deeper into the bass. It also does not have as big of a spike in the 30Hz square wave reproduction which is heard as less of a boom in the deep bass.
Both will do great for you I am sure.
