I recently decided I wanted a pair of beats but have seen that there may be better types of headphones out there so I wanted to know what the best kind I could get for a $200-$300 budget were. I listen to a lot of heavy music and rock genres along with electronic or alternative sounds. Any imput would be appreciated. Thanks!

For rock and metal the most recommended headphones here will probably Grado's. for your budget you can get sr225i's. which are considered by many the best value for money of the entire grado line.

if you dont intend them for outside use these are perfect. as they are open backs though you will have major sound leaks taking them outside.

Alright thanks. I have never heard of these but I haven't done too much research to be honest. I am an avid listener to music and usually just use in-ear gummy or some cheap headphones but I'm ready for a new, better sound quality and comfort. I probably will not go with these headphones because during the warmer seasons I am avidly outdoors and the sound leakage would probably annoy me. Also I like to listen to music and imitate it while I play drums (which are in my garage sadly). Thanks for the imput though. Appreciated.

if you arent going to use open backs, may i suggest, looking at the vote the headphones all seem bass heavy, ultrasone pro 900 are portable, closed back and huge basshead phones.

And unlike beats still have midrange and treble. :)

I appreciate all suggestions smily_headphones1.gif. The only headphones I've actually witnessed were the beats from the pole. The others I had just heard were better than the beats. Forgive me if I'm naive on the subject ha. Could you define openbacks tho? Is that why the beats are loud to other people near the listener? Thanks.

well all beats are closed backs. beats, you can hear, while other people listen to them is because they usually have them up so loud you can hear it through the cheap plastic.

open backs are headphones that generally leak sound fairly heavily, because the driver is exposed.

well.. not exposed totally, most have large vented air chambers. if you cant picture it well, google the Grado rs1i, and the audez'e LCD series. big grilles on the back. you will see it then

closed backs dont have large grilles. so they reduce sound going in and out:

pro's of open backs: better soundstage, generally better for mids/treble.

cons: sound leakage, weaker bass.

pro's of closed backs: can still have relative soundstage, while exhibiting good quality of treble, bass and midrange, more bass.

cons: less soundstage, you wont ever feel like listening to speakers. unlike you sometimes do with high end open backs, less dynamic.

also those shures are excellent for the price point, you will need to amp all the headphones though for better results.

have you looked at the beyerdynamic: DT770/880/1350?

Ahh I see. I looked up the Ultrasone 580/780's as well. The 580's caught my attention with the direction mention of suitable for drummers. 780 is a higher number obviously, so does that mean it is a newer model & will produce a better sound cuz I couldn't see a direct difference in appearance. The beyerdynamics didn't quite seem to my style with the way the wire was set up. I think I'd like either a wireless pair or a natural look with 2 wires. However, I haven't tried a single side, so maybe change is good. I'm just afraid to spend $200 or so to find out if I like change ha. Also some of the pictures had a strange look where the headphones had 2 parts as if the headpiece was split. I'm unsure of how to explain it, but maybe you know what I mean already? I'll look into the Ultrasone's as a choice now, but I still like the appearance of Beats.

Well before you do anything I would check out the Monoprice 8323....for $23 they sound like no brainer....I plan on grabbing a pair.

Read the review Malveaux did on the MPH-839 where he compares them to the M50 here:

Also try the Panasonic HTF-600 for around the same price....I have these and they are worthwhile addition to any can collection.

I don't see any need to spend so much money when you don't experience what a good set of budget cans offer first.

If you want closed the HFI 580's should be taken into consideration, I mostly use mine for trance and techno but have used them with alternative and rock and like them very much. I have never tried the M50's but if you are considering them I think you can't go wrong with checking out the 580's or 780's

send me a link as to what you mean.

and there is no denying beats may look better.

but if you listen to beats, then a pair recommended on here widely, you would feel kinda feel ripped off cos they would blow beats out of the water.

780's have less bass than the 580, better treble and i think are also suited for drumming.

Wait, are all the Ultrasone's 1-sided as well? I need some feedback on how much people prefer single side over both wires. I'm kind of a headbanger so should I try out these kind for mobility without losing them from my head? Ha

Thanks. I have checked out reviews of M50's and haven't been too impressed by what people say. Many say that they prefer another type over M50's, so I don't wana make a wrong purchase.

The ultrasones are one sided cables.

i dont have a cable side preference (1 or two sided) i dont think it makes a difference.

never tried headbanging with headphones on. that's more a speaker thing for me :)

Yeah, there is a thread or two around here about how the M50's "fell off." Like I said I've never tried them but I see a lot of comparisons between them and the Ultrasone 580/780 so I assume they are somewhat comparable.

I checked out the review and the sweaty cups bother me the most. I couldn't stand that, otherwise they sound fine. I will most likely pick up a pair of these for quick use, but wouldn't want them as my main go-to source.
