Futuresonic Atrio M5 Cord

Hey Everyone:

 

My cord for my Futuresonic Atrio M5 has broken down (see picture below).  Even though the cord is broken, somehow the sound is unchanged.  I'm not really sure how this is possible - does anyone with a technical background know how the a wire completely severed in two can have no effect on the sound?

 

Also, does anyone have any good recommendations for an IEM under $200 USD with a sound signature similar to the M5's but with better cord durability?

I think I may have resolved my first question - I think the broken wire may just be to keep the cord stiff.  I'm still curious about durable IEM's with a sound signature similar to the m5 though.  Thanks.
