Sample rate question.

So I just finished my new setup and it sounds amazing!!! Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card, Denon d5000 headphones.

I have the settings on HiFi DSP (dolby **** sounds bad) with the equalizer on flat with 2 channels for stereo. Looking around it seems the best sample rate for listening to music is 44.1, however is there any real negative sides to having it on 196 for example? And also, what would be the best sample rate for a general game and for music creating programs such as Ableton live.

I am ultra impressed as to how well surround sound works in stereo (2 channel) mode on HiFi settings without Dolby. I reckon it works as well as my g35 for surround, obviously in other areas this setup destroys the g35...

Bump.

Depends on whether the upsampling is being performed by software (more of a detriment), or passed through to hardware (less of a detriment). In most cases you will want to play back at the native sample rate of the media. But then again, you may find favor in the sound quality of DSP-induced distortion (many do)...

Set the sample-rate to align with whatever you're listening to; for most music this will be 44.1khz. For most games 44.1khz will work, some games will prefer 48khz (I don't mean sonically, I mean the game will crash less). DVDs should technically be 48khz. Audio creation depends on the project - you should be using ASIO ideally. Set the sample rate to whatever the project is doing. There is no benefit to 192khz; nothing uses it (ostensibly if you're creating electronic music, you could).

Yeah I use ASIO for music creation.

Just a question about amplification. Am I delusional, or does amplifying the sound to +18 dB for 300-600ohms (or just amplifying in general) then turning the sound right down give a better sound?

What do you mean "+18 dB and then turning the sound right down"? You mean you think it sounds better while you're adjusting the volume dial? Or what?
