Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer + DAC

Thread Starter

Hi! Is there a way I could use an external DAC with my X-Fi sound card? I've heard that Wolfson 8740 DAC on FiiO E10 is much better than CS4382, which is in XtremeGamer. Or should I stick with my XtremeGamer and just buy an AMP?

The thing is I don't want to completely switch my X-Fi card with DAC/AMP combo because of some X-Fi features like Crystallizer or CMSS-3D.

I'm kinda new to DAC/AMPs so please don't be too harsh if some of my points might look stupid/retarded : )

Thanks.

ps. The headphones I'll be using are Brainwavz HM5's.

You can run an optical mini out of the microphone jack on your soundcard if that's what you're asking.  I have the same card and I currently use my x-fi to send theoretically bit perfect data via optical to my DAC.

I think you'll notice a difference between the E10 and the X-Fi headphone out.  If you're looking for something suited for a $100 can like the HM5, the e7/e10 is the way to go I'd say.  No need to mess around with optical, just use USB.
