Hey Head-Fi'ers!

You were all such a great help on my last thread, and my brother loves his srh440's.

Now, i want a pair of great sounding closed headphones that max around $250, need to be easily driven, need to be durable, and need to be comfortable and stylish.

Also, ideally a detachable cable, if possible

I listen to a varied range of music, but i really like bass, as long as it does not overpower.

Heres what I have narrowed my choices down to:

v moda m80

v moda lp2

pioneer hdj 2000

audio technica pro700mk2

denon d2000

ultrasone pro 750

ultrasone DJ1 pro

I am worried that the ultrasones are going to look weird and that I am not going to like the S logic.

I am worried that the denons and v modas will leak sound too much.

I am worried that i will find the pro700mk2s to be uncomfortable.

I am worried that the pioneers wont sound as good and one of the sides might go out.

Help a brother out

Thanks in advance!

most newbies won't even tell the ultrason'es S-Logic. read my review in the signature. it has some of slogic properties and fears in it. and should adress them.

Denon and M80's? i don't think the Denon's will leak as they are over ear(think is the keyord)  and i think the M80's might leak a bit as they are on ear(again..key word. don't have them. just conjucter here)

and i gotta add one thing to newbies. Stop adding that you dont wnat an amp. you didn't say it but it was implied i think. an amp is what brings you into the leagues. getting one makes sure you follow the amp path (like a little upgrade)  and enforces the idea and feeling of an amp into you. I would allocate some money for one. just driving them doesn't mean they will sound too good when the hiss and noise on your ipod overtakes.

V-Moda Crossfade LP2 covers all those bases, and they don't leak.

Thanks for the Reply.

An amp might be something that I will consider later on. but as of now, I simply want to get the best headphones possible ampless, as I might not have the opportunity to buy an amp later on.

Do you think a 100 dollar pair of cans + a $100 amp trumps a $200 pair of headphones ampless?

yeah exactly what he said. but.....the enjoyability i would say is a lot higher... you really are astonished when you first hear an amp. espeically something like a amp and DAC combo with EQ options like my E17....i have read many reviews ont he LP2's being quite muddy but having a lot of bass. edge of the audiophile realm. read up on their reviews.

Getting the heapdhone first and then amp is a good idea as well.

I'd say the LP2 is more warm than muddy and the OP said he was looking for bass that was not overpowering, which I personally don't feel it is. I guess waiting for the M-100 might be an option, but it lookslike they are going to be over-budget at $200+ and there is still no release date, I believe. If the LP2 was to be purchased direct from V-Moda, there is a sixty day test drive option, so if they do not impress they can be returned.

And have to agree with get the phones first and then look at an amp option later.

Yeah, those LP2's do look good.

can you compare them to any other headphones on my list, or ones that are around this range? that would be much appreciated

Bowie

Just stumbled across this thread.  I'll ask nicely again - if you don't know, don't post.

Let's look at what you just advised .........

  1. " i don't think the Denon's will leak as they are over ear(think is the keyord)"
Suggest you actually do some research - here's one of the first links I came across when doing a search:
    http://www.head-fi.org/t/247855/how-deep-and-spacious-are-the-cups-on-the-denon-ah-d2000-how-isolating-are-they
For the record - I've heard the Denons once, fleetingly, so I would not even attempt to answer.  Why did you?

  2. "and i think the M80's might leak a bit as they are on ear(again..key word. don't have them. just conjucter here)"
I haven't heard the M80 either - but I have read the reviews because they actually interested me enough to want more info at the time.  Again - a 60 second search .....
    http://www.head-fi.org/t/590167/v-moda-m-80-v-80-sound-leakage
    http://www.head-fi.org/t/586863/sennheiser-hd25-1-ii-vs-v-moda-m-80-v-80

  3. "and i gotta add one thing to newbies. Stop adding that you dont wnat an amp. you didn't say it but it was implied i think. an amp is what brings you into the leagues."
Complete and utter BS.  You need an amp if your source cannot drive your headphones properly.  That's the only reason.

Sorry OP - just want to stop this kind of BS in it's tracks.  I'm not big on bass - so I won't recommend anything.  It appears from your list that you're also looking for portability as well though?  If so - add the Senn HD25-1 ii.  Not exactly bass heavy - but very portable, durable, and has good punchy bass impact.

I'll leave you to the posters who have experience with portables though wink.gif

Sadly, i don't have any of the other headphones on your list, but as I said previously, you could always get them direct from V-Moda and take them on a sixty day test drive.

alright no problem. I might take advantage of that. Do you feel that they are well worth the price? is there any comparable headphones that you have that I could use a benchmark?
