Given that the BD player can output sound over HDMI and analog at the same time, what I thought I could do is simply connect bookshelf speakers to an amp, and then turn them off when not in use (e.g. when my parents are using the tv). Then when I use the tv, I can mute the TV's speakers, and turn on the amp, so that I can use the speakers.
Here's what I was thinking.

Would this setup work well?
I've read good things about that Pioneer set, and considering I have a $100 giftcard from Christmas, it would probably be a good item to spend it on.

the pioneers are great speakers with defiantly a superior crossover design. i have the towers but they're different since the towers have 3 6.5'' drivers( 1 is dedicated to midrange/midbass and the other 2 the bass drivers) and defiantly probably has better crossover work to work with the speakers selected. problem with the pioneers is they need some decent power behind them to really get them going especially if you want to bring the bass out cause they're 6ohms nominal with low 87db@1w efficiency and the bookshelves seem to have a lower efficiency of 84db@1w which means depending on room size you'll defiantly need a pretty beefy amp especially if you want to have dynamic headroom with them. yea a few watts be more then fine to get them good listening volume but you would have no dynamic power headroom and might cause the amp to clip really soon. amp with atleast 40wpc(real watts from 20hz-20khz. not the 1khz crap) would be more then ideal for the task..
are you sure you don't want a stereo amp/receiver? i mean you can put it underneath your dvd player and so forth. you don't need to buy a 80lb monster amp that has a huge footprint.
that's the downside to the pioneers is they need some good power behind them but very natural sounding speakers with very good crossover work and cab design and a very smooth decay in the full frequency range that's not even found with 1000 a piece speakers.
