Need advice on AKG HD 242

Hello!

I was thinking about getting into music, and the AKG HD 242 strike me as affordable entry level headphones. I have just enough money for them as well.

Thing Is, I don't have a decent sound card (you know onboard)  or an amp ( many reviews I've read suggested an amp for realizing their full potential).

So I need advice. Do i need an amp? Do I need a new sound card?

I can spare enough money for a Xonar DG,which comes with an onboard headphone amp.

What do you think? Is this a good combination and use of my money?

I would rather ask someone since I don't know about this yet. Thanks.

Not sure if this helps but I'm new to this game and just ordered the AKG K240 MKII for $99 shipped. Seems like a good deal. Maybe it will help with your budget. I couldn't tell for sure but my understanding is that the two headphones have a very similar sound.

The cans are very good indeed but they are very revealing and might not please you if your source isn´t good. I would not use them unamped since they realy shines when given some power.

But it´s a good start and the cans will still be good when you get an amp...And yes you will, the devil has you now! ;)

Thank you for the response, sadly they can't ship it to my country.

What do you think about the Xonar DG built in headphone  amp? You think that's enough? It's cheap as well, and I will get a better sound card out of it.

Hi I have the K240 studio which is basically the same headphone.  It is a very nice headphone with a good midrange. Bass sounds lean at first but kicks in much more with only a couple of hours burn in.  This is what I found anyway.  You will need some sort of amp even though they are only 55 ohm.  I'm using a Fiio E7 at the moment though this is barely enough.  I'm often up at 50 out of 60 on the volume setting.  It does the job though something with a bit more gain would be better.  It's easy to use just plug it into usb. The new E17 (update of E7) is out soon but is more expensive. I'm not sure about the Xonar as I have not used it.

It sure would not harm them in any way..Get the sound card, and if you want "more" you know where to look next?. You might be happy with the sound right out of the sound card you got at the moment..I´ts very subjective.
