We can add the Ultrasone HFI-450 to the list. Even though it's closed back, it can still display an "open-like" soundstage.

Even though there's currently no DAP category, I have to say, the Hisound Studio-V puts out a very nice soundstage.

We should add the Ultrasone PRO550/DJ1 PRO to the list. Nice soundstage on them.

Standout performers I've heard:

IEMS:

UE Reference Monitors
Hifiman RE-262
MEElectronics M-9
Phonak Audeo PFE 112

Full Size:

HD800
K1000
HE Audio Jades
HE60
HE90
Beyer T5P (closed)
Audeze LCD3 + Hifiman HE-6 (but only on 1 rig, so maybe not add them)

Oh, I love the Audio Technica AD700's soundstage so much. It just makes live recordings sound so...real. Their soundstage almost competes with the my bookshelf speakers at times.

I haven't heard any other open headphones yet, which is a pity. I'm just hoping that AKGs, Beyerdynamics, etc will have that "real" sound.

Anyway, thanks for the list! It shall help me greatly when I shop for headphones in the future.

Here are a couple of cans that are the soundstage-head's worst enemy! Audio Technica M50 and Etymotic MC5/MC3. When listening to them, whatever you hear is pretty much always "inside of your head." But you guys probably already know about them. biggrin.gif

My new (new to me) Trafomatic Experience Head One + HD600 = largest and most holographic sound stage I have ever heard.

The Earsonics SM3 and Aurisonics ASG-1 should be on the IEM list. SM3 definitely has an out-of-head stage which is really impressive for an IEM, and the ASG-1 has insanely good sound placement and separation.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Hisoundaudio Popo added to the IEM category.  The sound stage on that model is quite large.

@chicolom: the EX1000 seem to be listed as a Yamaha rather than Sony.

Thanks, I had it listed twice under each. Fixed.

Sony PFR-V1 is a great candidate for beeing one of the best since it has been designed mainly for that purpose
post #43 of 319

Can anyone name inexpensive elecrets which would make the list?

I forgot about those.  They're a bit of an anomaly, but I will add them to the list...

The JVC FXT90 is great in this category. It competes pretty well to my HFI-450, especially when the FXT90 is amped.
