Confused sound preference headphone advice needed!

Hey,

Long time, no see Head-Fi.

Looking to buy a new mid-fi headphone setup at the end of next year. I've been listening to my Pro 900's for quite a few months and I'm loving them but I'm looking for some headphones to switch occasionally for a 'breather'.

I posted a thread asking about a new <$1k setup for a HD650 + Schiit Asgard + HRT MSII last year but ended up with cold feet (well can't spend all my spare cash now can I? >.<).

Now I'm not entirely sure if the warm sound of the HD650's are for me anymore. I've become somewhat hooked on the metallic treble of the Pro 900s, leading me to EQ the treble as much as +20db on some other headphone's I've used.... \(。ヮ°;)ノ

This is concerning and I'm not entirely sure if i am a basshead, treblehead or a fan of v shaped cans. I'm having trouble tolerating 'muddy' sound and am really hooked on 'shiny' highs as much as I am on bass. Scratch that, bass is no longer as much a priority as good treble is. Will trying a 'warm' headphone be alright for me?

Well I've started to weight up my options and need some opinions on the following choices:

  • Go for the HD650 rig and try a different sound signature, ditch the treble.
  • Suggest a different HP e.g. (Byr DT990 250ohm/600ohm stick with fun bass/treble sound and plan a new rig).
  • IEM route and grab a Future Sonic MG6Pro *Heh maybe I should ask one thing at a time. Still open to an IEM route though.

All these options are equally appealing and I could sure use some advice....

(Proofreading this, I understand this ultimately comes down to my own preference but I really could use some clarifying/advice/discussion/anything)

Cheers~

I really enjoy my DT990 ( 250 Ohm ), but it definitely has emphasized bass and treble.  Not so much that you will not enjoy your music, but they are far from studio mixing headphones.  They complement my AH-D2000 quite well.

Reading how to attenuate the treble at times down by up to 20dB I would say stay away from headphones with peaks in the treble around 2k, 3k, and 4k Hz.

Here is an example:

Here are the charts regarding the Ultrasone Pro900.  Honestly they are some of the poorest curves I have seen and improving on such a headphones should really not be a problem.

Here are my suggestions in order of Improvement:

1.)  Sennheiser HD-598

2.)  Audio Technica ATH-M50

3.)  V-Moda M80 / V80

4.)  Beyer DT990 ( 32 Ohm )  why risk not being able to drive them well?

Let us know if you prefer open or closed headphones.

Stay away from the HD-650 as you will end up not liking the sound signature in the long run.

I think the OP meant equalizing the treble up by 20 dB, rather than down.

That is probably suitable for your needs, if you want open. The higher impedance versions have slightly clearer sound and more extended treble. Since you intend to spend on an amplifier anyway, the 32 Ohm model is only recommended if you need it to be well usable also as a portable straight from an iPod or similar device. There is also a cheaper "pro" version (250 Ohm, with coiled cord) that has more bass.

Alternatively, you may consider other Ultrasone models, such as the Pro 2900 (open).

The Denon AH-D2000/5000/7000 (these are closed) are also popular choices by people with similar preferences to yours.

I'm not quite sure if I made what I was trying to say clear but I am looking for headphones to alternate with my Pro 900's (I've yet to find better headphones for EDM, one of the primary genres I listen to). I actually meant that I have gotten so used to the high treble of the Pro 900's that I have EQ'd much more warmer headphones up by +20db in an extreme case of a muddy sounding headphone.

I have a budget of $1000 for a complete setup or just a a new headphone and a new amp. I am looking in the mid-fi range. Also I have owned an M50 previously as well and have little interest in a HD598 or V-Moda superaural cans

I have no qualms with open cans and am merely worried that jumping in straight into a can known for it's warm sound would be too much of a contrast to really appreciate, from being used to Pro900 treble to a HD650 for example. How about a HD600 instead so it isn't so much as a shock to change to .
