Schiit Bifrost cannot play 192 sample rate under windows 7 through optical

when I chose 192khz sample rate in the windows playback menu, and clicked on test, there's no sound coming out, has anyone have any idea?

os: windows 7 x64 xp1

Laptop: NP8170 Realtek ALC892 audio chip

DAC: Schiit Bifrost

I can play any other sample rate but the 192khz, regardless of 16/24bit. There's just no sound coming out, but the bifrost was able to make a switch sound from the machine.

[BTW, the 192khz works in usb mode.]

Very few optical inputs can actually transfer 192, the upper limit is generally 24/96.  So while it is theoretically possible, it usually will not work in practice.  Many DAC manufacturers just specify 24/96 and not 24/192 with toslink input so they will not have get disappointed customers.

My Bifrost also does not get 24/192 through optical input.  Maybe with a glass cable and perfect alignment it would be possible?

dang.... I was really expecting it could though. The cable I got is from BJC and I thought it really is decent but meh, i guess i'll just be happy with my 24/96 then , or use usb 24/192

My Bifrost is connected with optical and is playing 24/192 content just fine.

If you are using Foobar make sure your buffer length is fairly short or it will error on you.

I'll have to look when I get home from work. What I know right now is this:

Win 7 64bit Home
Realtek chipset (fill in later)
ASIO Spdif output through Fubar player with 500ms buffer length.
Monoprice optical cable ($6-7)
Drivers (fill in later)

so far I have almost the smae setting with you,

win7 ult

Realtek chipset ALC892

my driver is 2.67 and can I ask what does ASIO stand for?

also if it's not too much of a trouble can you perform the following thing for me just curious:

right click on the speaker icon at the right bottom of ur desktop

choose playback device

select the optical out device

select property

select supported formats

and can u run a test out of the 192khz? do you actually hear anything?

thanks

Will do shortly when I get home.

I found out my chipset at least though, it's the Realtek ALC888B.

ASIO is a bit perfect playback driver/plugin similar to WASAPI.

sweet, did you the the asio4all or you bought it on steinberg website?

Here is the Realtek Driver in use: 6.0.1.6526

But actually I didn't have it installed after a recent reformat/install and it was using the basic windows driver for the sound device, yet it was still working. I've installed the above Realtek driver now and it is still working fine.

I'm using asio4all. The installation in Foobar can be annoying. If you run into problems let me know. Try installing it from the preferences > components menu first.

I performed the test in the sound panel you mentioned above and heard sound when testing the 192k option.
