audio technica ath-m50 vs sony mdr-v6

These are my two very ast and final choices for headphones. Just want to know the exact differences and/or similarities between these two. I'm almost 100 percent towards the m50's however, just want to know peoples opinions including sound quality, how easily they are driven (impedence), sound stage, build quality, comfort, etc.
Much appreciated.

Both the M50 and MDR-V6 are built like tanks (I believe the V6 has a slight edge). The M50 will have a bit more bass punch, but the V6 does better at mids. I find the V6 more technical and precise, whereas the M50 has a more inviting sound. Both can be driven by an iPod, but they both benefit from amping. I find the V6 more comfortable, but I prefer the M50 for almost anything but long composing sessions.

For those types, the Sony xb500

The XB500 is the epitome of overpowered bass, so they probably won't work. Also, they're quite flabby-sounding elsewhere, if better than others in their price range. If you're budget's $175 you can get something miles better than an XB500.

He's right, but what you mentioned I believe that would be your choice. However, the ultrasone hi 580 has known to be bassy for electronic type music.

I think the HFI-780, with the bass a little more laid-back, would fit well also. Sorry for hijacking your thread by the way, OP.

The two you mentioned in your original post are certainly good headphones.

Having had both, (sold the M50's; still have the V6's) I'd recommend the M50's as an overall better sounding phone.

Build quality on both is very sold, both are easy to drive, and they're generally similar in comfort and soundstage.

Try the brainwavz hm5 or Fischer fa003, great neutral headphones.

I agree with the FA-003/HM5 recommendation if you're looking for something that is pretty neutral across all ranges and sounds great with acoustic music. I've owned and tested a wide range of cans, but listening to Hamumatsu Girl by Mike Park (or anything by Michael Hedges) still makes me jump every time. I know it's a cliche here, but it makes me feel that there's a guitarist and singer in the room with me.
