Tube Amp without a headphone jack/output.

Wasn't too sure where this goes, but yeah, going to acquire a nifty EL34 Tube amp soon from a local seller for some little $$$ just to try out and from my knowledge, the amp doesn't have a headphone jack/output. It has a switch knob for CD/AUX input and banana output for speakers and from what I've read so far, a dummy load is required if a headphone is to be used or a mod dividing the output with matched and appropriate ohm rated resistors that are matched to the tube's load to the speaker output on the back, so there is something there taking all the load otherwise plugging headphones via a line converter straight into the banana jacks will blow up something in the amp or potentially overload the drivers and kill the headphone itself.

If anyone or someone knows anything or a possible workaround please let me know.

Thanks

You need to parallel a non-inducting resistor with your headphone to bring down the impedance to around 8 ohms if you intend to use the 8 ohm tap from the amp. You need to add a resistor too as a voltage divider.

Does this method affect the sound through the headphones in anyway? Will I still be able to drive headphones of rated impedence from 32ohm's to 600?

Can provide a schematic or so? The amp in question is this: http://www.hi-end.on9mart.com/cart/MENG%20EL84%20hdbk.html

Thanks

Use a high quality non-inducting resistors to minimize the affect on the sq. I use Mills resistors, however there are more expensive resistors that you can use.

The resistor value changes depending on the impedance of your headphones.

What is the impedance of your headphone?

My headphones vary from 32ohms to 600ohms.

Speaker output to headphones converters/transformes

Be aware that there are issues if the speaker taps do not have common ground. FWIR - I haven't tried this myself, just been reading up in case I  will...
