Where can I find nylon braided cords?

I used to have skullcandy hesh headphones before i wised up and realized that there was so much better out there. But i have to admit that I really like the nylon braided cord it had. I am planning on getting the Sennheiser HD439 headphones that have the detachable cord so I want to find a 3.5mm cord that can be attached in there, but some extensive google searching didn't really give me an answer. Where can i find a nylon braided cord for my sennheisers?

Would cotton be ok? If so, and if you're otherwise happy with the stock cable, I could have it sent up to my braiders and have them braid over the stock cable with cotton. They may even have some filament nylon thread, I'd have to ask. It wouldn't cost much. I don't imagine they'd charge me more than 25 cents a foot or so.

You have braiders? Are they a business or just your friends? What goes into braiding a cable? I don't think I would have an issue with having them braided if it still feels similar to the nylon braiding. It seems to make them feel much sturdier.

I found a cheap cable that has the braiding I wanted. Can you tell me if this will have the same quality as the stock cable with the senn HD439?

They're a business. They do custom braiding work for me.

The braiding machine's a bit like a children's "maypole." There are a number of bobbins which are placed on carriers that rotate and spin around a center point that braids the threads together. For braiding over a cable, the cable is inserted through the middle of the machine and the braider braids the threads over the cable like a maypole.

Here's a short video showing braiding machines braiding over wiring:

Cotton doesn't have quite the same feel as multifilament nylon. Cotton is short fiber, so it has to be spun into thread. Multifilament nylon uses many long continuous filaments of thread. So it's more like dental floss. Because of this, multifilament nylon will have a smoother finish than cotton. Multifilament nylon's more like multifilament silk.

I have no experience with the HD-439's cable so I really can't say. But that Kingston cable looks to have a nice multifilament nylon braid over it. What sort of plug does the HD-439 use? If it's just a simple 3.5mm plug, then I'd snag one of those Kensington cables and give it a try.

The problem is that the senn has a gold-plated cable and this is just a standard quality. Is there really that big of a difference between gold-plated and regular metal kinds?

Well, let's put it this way. The Kensington is nickel plate over brass. The Sennheiser is likely gold plate over nickel plate over brass. If that's the case, then the gold plating is little more than cosmetic.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. And hey, the cable's only $6. What do you have to lose?

Tell you what, if you buy it and you don't like it, I'll buy it from you for what you paid for it including shipping. How's that?

I'm afraid I've no experience with either of those headphones. Might want to ask about that over in the full size headphone forum.

Good luck!
